The old timers at the track say it is not necessary because when the tire distorts at speed that the balance weights will not keep the tire balanced? I still have them balanced but it got me to thinking

No need...I have them balanced when I have new slicks mounted because it's included but after a few races the wheel weights are gone.

I've been through at least 10 pair of slicks that we mounted and have never balanced them. We would mount them right in our pits(beadlocks) and then go run 260 MPH without any trouble. No they don't need to be balanced, I'm sure. I'm talking racing slicks only.

Is one better than the other?
Well I've never heard someone say that something unbalanced works better than balanced. If nothing else, you get more even tread wear, and save your shocks from having to do unnecessary work. I do my own, but if I couldn't , I'd still pay the few bucks.

have you ever tried to balance something round then D shape it.? the tire is not round going down the track, so how does balancing it help anything?

I will continue to balance mine.... if you ever seen
one really out of balance the car can jump off the
track.... the pros do it for a reason

Couple of reasons. Just unbalanced turns into really unbalanced. But balanced turns into a bit un balanced. Also, If your rims are out, they do not go d shaped.
Kind of a "lemons, make lemonade" deal.

Some of them are so far out. What can it hurt, for the little bit of time and small cost why not? Generally if there is a [problem with a slick, you will find it while balancing.I would rather learn about it on the balance machine then down track.

I understand, I have done it both ways and couldn't tell the difference. key is getting a good set of slicks.

while I've only used DOT style slicks I balance mine mainly because I drive to the track and home on them. But Even if I didn't I'd probably go w/ balanced. I've never thrown the weights either but then again, my fasted car only went 12.0's w/ a 1.65 60 foot.

Oh yea, we would measure roll out after mounting. If there weren't matched, back they went to GY or Hooiser. Once you know your rims are good, your good. IMO

You can sure tell if they are un-balanced in the shut
down

What can it hurt,

I never liked the stick on weights(beadlocks) When they come off it could hurt someone or something.

This topic came up a few years ago and I was called an idiot when I said I did not balance my slicks. The first burnout and that tire is unbalanced. Therefore, don't bother balancing. But what do I know, I've been in the tire business for 15 years

Ran them both ways. Did have a set of radial slicks that I made like 2 passes with unbalanced and found out pretty quick they needed it. Don't know if it's just because they were radials or not. I use stick on weights with duct tape over them. Never had any come off either.

I balance! Had enough shakey rides before I did. None since.

I had a set of slicks that shook so hard at the 1000 foot that I couldn't see out of my eye glasses. A quickie bubble balance job is all it took to correct.

Too many cars, too many parts, too little coin, too little space to work in, too little time left to make it all happen! Update: down to one ride, still too many parts, a little more jingle in the pocket, gaining space, and it's going to happen this year!
