I thought all low block engines used the same main bearings until I started looking at new old stock bearings. Looks like 1974 and later 400 engines used a different main bearing set.

Is this due to a difference in the block or crank or both?

74 and later had a larger thrust bearing surface. I think you can use the older bearings in the newer blocks, but not vice versa. Both the block and crank would be different in the thrust area. Perhaps someone here, will know for sure.

You are correct about interchangeability.

The later block has a larger relief cut for the larger radius bearing.
The crank has a larger surface are for the thrust.
