Depends on whos parts you are using for the install. But yes I have always had to use one and depending on whos parts between .020" to 3/8"!

There is no 'one answer fits all' here unless the answer is "*it depends*". Basically you'll have to determine what distance you'll need depending on the type of starter IN EVERY APPLICATION. There just are so many ways to retrofit a PG, so many different parts available (INCLUDING CONVERTER) you could list everything but still the answer is the same. On my Tilton the free gap was .100" plusminus .040 AND to set the backlash between .01 and .03"

Some of the adapters that mount the flywheel to the crank determines a lot. Some go on the engine side and some go towards the transmission

Good points.

Just to show the wide range of results, here is my combo:
PG with JW Ultrabell
ATI flexplate and crank adapter
440 stock block
Power Master mini starter (normal size Denso style mini starter)
1/4" thick midplate between the block and JW bell housing.
Turbo style converter (Ultimate Converter) (PG has turbo input shaft); and 1/4" thick spacers between the converter lugs and flexplate (supplied by Ultimate Converters).

Starter spacer (two pieces) 0.537"
And the starter nose uses the JW nose extension too.

Part of that thickness is because the previous owner cut the midplate opening so 1/4" is just for the midplate thickness.

Here’s some of my stash of parts from over the years as I’ve used a lot of different kits in my small and big blocks I got a few of those shim packs from summit and they work great.

We used a JW bell with his crank adapter, The Wheel and shim kit to start. Didn't like all the shims so after determining the thickness needed, we made 2 1/4" aluminum spacers. 1/8"mid plate from when we had the 3 speed so it was scalloped to allow the starter to mount against the bell. Standard GM converter with 1/8" shims between the flexplate and converter pads. Mopar Performance starter. Worked perfect..

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

I use shims like Pittsburgh posted in his pic that came with my JW bell years ago.

I only use one with my setup.

Exactly. Get a good flashlight and after you bolt the starter in check your clearance. Push the starter away enough so you have plenty of clearance. Good luck.
