Ladies and Gentlemen, been a long time. Hope everyone is doing well! I have always got good results from this forum and hoping to keep that streak alive!

I am in the process of researching converting the 46RE trans to an 8 hp in a Dakota with the 5.9 motor. I think I have everything solved EXCEPT for how to deal with the factory crankshaft position sensor and how to modify it to work with the 8 speed.

Has anyone used a crank trigger on the harmonic balancer into the factory ECU or know a way to use the stock crankshaft position sensor with a 8 hp setup?

is your 5.9 not a magnum with a factory spot for the cps?,i would think with some head scratching and drilling you could come up with a mount for the rear of the block

I think what he is after is the flex plate for the 8 speed doesn't support the crank sensor since the engines it would be attached to have internal crank triggers.
I've been thinking of doing this as well with my magnum headed LA so I can run the fuel injection. There is no LA weighted flywheel with crank trigger slots in it that I know of. So far I haven't decided if it's worth it to me.

cant the magnum flexplate be modified so the newer converter will bolt to it?,do you need a weight to add balance?

Not sure if this is of help, but there are several options for dual sync distributors like the holley sniper unit, or even an old lead burn distributor. Seems I remember an old article in mopar action where Ehrenberg was using some jeep parts for a similar purpose.

Maybe somehow sandwich it.. The 8 speed flywheel has the starter ring gear on it.

I bought a “universal” MSD adjustable timing control add on box around 1998 that actually could only retard timing up to 20 degrees.
I toyed with the idea of mounting a slotted 1995 flexplate to the torsional damper with 20 - 30 degrees of advance figured into the mounting.
In the end I bought a 1995 Mopar Performance PCM for the 5.9 V8 Magnum V8 that advanced the timing 21 degrees above stock.

I still think a OEM flexplate,
or perhaps the right diameter cooking pan,
could be slotted to provide the crank signal and mounted up front.
Note the Chrysler Engineering double slot that tells the OEM PCM which cylinder numbers are which.

The MSD timing wheel does not have the right configuration, but could work with a Megasquirt EFI system.

In theory, I see how this could be done. However, I am wondering if it is not that straight forward. I would have to be stuck and down if that didn't work and didn't have any workable solution. So, I will wait for someone else to try it! :-)

A suggestion was to use a 5.9 flywheel and machine it to accept the proper converter...hmmm
