I need to replace the oil pan gasket on my 68 383 HP that has a stock oil pan. What is the best way to go? Dry cork? Cork with RTV? Rubber covered cork? Silicone? I have the engine out and only want to do this once. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

Do you have a stock-type pan with the stiffener dimples between the bolt holes?

If so, my experience with that type of tray is they work best with a pan that has a flat
mating surface.

It's a good design, but we've had persistant leaks using with a stock pan,
the raised rubber sealing ridges don't align well with the stock pan rail dimples.

Just my experience....

Joe

Agreed.

Best bet is to make sure the pan is flat, no bell mouthed bolt holes, then clean all the surfaces with thinner or acetone.
Then use the rubber coated fiber gasket.

A dab of RTV in each corner at the rear seal T joint and chain cover T joint. Don’t over tighten the bolts.

Cork covered with rubber works great with stock steel oil pans up
Regular cork does also with a Adhesive type RTV as a sealer between the block and oil pan and windage tray and both gaskets up

If you don't know cork is tree bark! Not a good sealing material. I avoid it at all costs!

I love getting older transmission to rebuild that have cork pan gaskets on them.
The whole outside of many of them are like brand new - from being covered with trans fluid.
And let’s not forget the leaking cork valve cover gaskets too.

Seriously though, if maintained they are cheap and practical. That means keeping the bolts snugged up and using a flat pan with the rubber coating.
Probably 90% of the leakers I see have bell mouthed pan rails and plain old cork gaskets.

One of the biggest non-functional warranty items we had at Chrysler was leaking trans pans.
When they went to the plastic backbone gasket our leak warranty dried up. Pun intended.
