I wonder if Helium would yield abother 1mpg over that?
Here is the deal, Nitrogen makes up 85% of our atmosphere, the air compressor that is used to fill tires up, is compressing 85% nitrogen as it is, that news channel is full of it. There was a thread on this a while back

I think Nitrogen is just more stable than normal air in your tire, it won't change pressure as much with the temperature outside. As long as you keep an eye on your pressures you won't see any difference, but if you never check it then it is probably a good idea.

Bingo. It's just more stable as temperature changes, that's why turbine aircraft use it in tires, pretty much exclusively. I have a friend who is an HVAC guy, and years ago, he had a tire leaking pretty bad on his service van, and he's stranded in the middle of nowhere. So he gets the bright idea to put some R12 in the tire to get him to a tire shop. It worked for a minute, but after a mile or so, the R-12 heated up and the pressure went to the moon, and so did the tire sidewall. BAM! NOT a good roadside fix.

Local news article claimed 1-1.5 mpg improvement. Anyone here tried it ?
Nope. not that gullible.

Actually I've heard that' it's petty handy in drag slicks...keeps you from having to chase tire pressure all day...especially if you are running all day and into the night...for us little guys it would probably be the PIA factor that would keep us from trying it...having to keep a nitrogen bottle as part of your track equipment...keep it filled...use a storage tank instead of a regular air compressor...might be just too much trouble...

Nitrogen an Oxygen the two biggest components in air actually have about exactly the same specific heat ratio, so the heat pressure deal doesn't really fly, you get rid of the O2 you do get rid of the corosion factor of O2, but not many tires corode, without any O2, I guess you would also have a safer tire, no O2 to support combustion, as long as it's in the tire. I work in the natural gas biz, I've seen that used in a pinch out in the field, but it's allways best to warn the guy fixing that tire. LOL

N2 and air are, for all intensive purposes, the same. That is, any heat expansion air has, the N2 will have too. But what N2 doesn't have is moisture and CO2 which do vary vapor pressure greatly with temperature fluctuations a tire will be exposed to. Also, as stated, there is no O2 to contribute to corrosion (or moisture) and the lack of O2 will prevent the rubber from braking down on the inside. For the money these guys are charging for N2 though, man, thats a racquet. I work in the air seperation industry and know what it takes to generate N2.

I understand that some places offer a free "tornado" with the nitrogen replacement to give you an even better mileage increase!

If regular air expands more with heat than straight N2 then you would think that you get better mileage with regular air as the pressure builds and rolling resistance goes down.
