Just wondering if it's worth it. I read an old article about switching all fluids(tranny, rear engine) over to synthetic and picking up a tenth.

Depends who you ask, the old-timers will say to run cheap type F, I use Amsoil Super Shift.

ATF+4 here it seems to handle the heat much better.

I run Redline's Type F "Racing" ATF. I have no idea of whether there's a performance improvement, but the higher temperature capability of a synthetic is what I'm looking for running a 4500-stall converter in a street / strip application where the car's driven to the track.

A TENTH?

Sounds like some other factors were left out to fluff the ads...

I run Castrol synthetic in my street/strip car. When I was running the brackets program, I would pull it every year for a freshen up/checkout. My trans builder recommended the synthetic and you could tell the difference on the wear and color on the clutches and steels. A cheap investment for reliability.

I build my own + customers 727. the type F is best, less slippery means more clamping power.

A prominent Torqueflite builder on this board told me he doesn't recommend synthetic trans fluid because its too slippery, and will glaze the clutches over time.

thats wrong, a premier tranny builder showed me clutches with ATF+4 synthetic compared to a conventional tranny fluid, same car & same trans., different fluids, ATF+4 clutches looked like new and the fluid was nice and red, the cnventional fluid was a little brown and clutches were worn.
i now use ATF+4 in my aluminum drum low gear set 727 and the clutches look like brand new and 4 seasons, and going strong.

Apples to oranges. The test would have to be of a controlled nature. i.e., same clearances, type and number of discs, same valve body, same car, same launch, same driver, same driving style and same service interval. I highly doubt this has been documented, thus, to quote a board member, "anecdotal".

The person that built my tranny,on this board, recommended Amsoil Synthetic. Thats what he used for the assembly of it and many others I presume. I've had it in it since newly built. But what DD suggested makes me think.. Back when I made the post about what my Dak runs and guys saying the #'s didn't add up, would synthetic fluid be a possible cause of the problem..Most guys in the post were thinking my converter may be a possible culprit??? MAYBE its the fluid... If thats the case, can I just drain the Amsoli and add the ATF and call it good or does the trans have to be totally gone through and have everything flushed?
