Uncle Tonys Garage has videos of slant 6 builds. At 225ci a supercharger from the 231ci 3.8 liter Buick (Bonnevilles Grand Prixs and Lesabres) would be a nice sized component.

He's also a particular fan of the 170 - "the perfect engine". Apparently in its day it ran in some junior NASCAR type series and ran away with the championship against the opposition (presumably other sixes??)

The slant six was so successful in the NASCAR series that they discontinued the events. They took 1st through 3rd and no one was close.

They kicked a$$ on the road course too.

But this was a six cylinder event.

That Miata he's stuffing it into is going to be hilarious. Would love to see a reactions video of faces at a Miata event with the hood up.

My father had a Ford f 250 4x4 with the 300 six cylinder engine and a Ford truck with a 300 six cylinder and a two speed diff. He used to

transport his backhoe around with it. He also had a chev 4x4 with the 292 six cylinder engine. It was our work vehicle and was fitted with lpg.

Both the ford and chev motors were very low rpm but high torque. they are a reliable work horse.

Getting back to slant six engines, I have owned about four of them. They are a great engine, start easy and run really smooth.

but everyone I owned was hard on fuel.

Huh don't see my last post here.
I've driven 300equipped Ford's before, (never owned one) and they weren't bad to drive power wise
My brother owned a 79 f150 2wdwith a 300 and 3 on the tree, 3.00 gear out back. Started easy, ran strong but it would not go over 45 MPH
No matter what he did to it.
He got it from a local mom and pop car lot. About 6 months after he got it we were somewhere, and some guy came up to my brother, and asked if that was his truck.turns out it was the PO of that truck /// the reason he traded it was because of the 45 MPH max thing.
We ended up putting a 351C in it out of an older car. And a granny gear 4 speed. That thing would go like a bat outta He11 after that. No more 45 mph limitation

What gets me is that everyone who isn't trying to talk me into dumping the/6for a V8 is telling me to dump the 727. It stays for now.

Are you wanting suggestions or not?

That low 1st and 2nd geared 904 will feel like another 75 HP in that truck and get better MPG. Also a rough truck with a running 318 can typically be had for $500 ish around here and provide every part needed for a swap for less than you just spent on a 225.

With your current 727 and 3.21 you have a starting line ratio of 7.86 in 1st gear.
With the 3.21 axle and the low gearset 904 you have an equivalent starting line ratio equal to 3.62 axle ratio behind the 727.

But why porting, cutting the head for more power, etc. then leaving something on the table.

1980 and later low gearset transmissions are a dime a dozen plus you can get lockup for better mileage.
Only setback is you will need a little longer prop shaft.

Obviously your call.

I loved the slant 6, most came with really nice car bodies. I loved to pull the slant 6 and its attached trans out and replace them with V8s.

Probably not the kind of love your looking for though.

We had a 225 with a 3 on the tree in a 65 Barracuda. It was kind of fun to drive, but I bought it in a package deal with a 318 4 speed in a 65 Barracuda. The slant 6 wasn't near as much fun as the 318 was. I did pull the few parts off the slant 6 car I needed for the V8 car, and the guy I sold the running and driving slant 6 car to loved it and drove it several years.

I race a slant 6 powered 63 valiant in the 24 hours of lemons series and it works really well. This is probably the wrong forum though for slant six info. Check out slantsix.org for good info and look into Dutra's book. https://www.amazon.com/Chrysler-Slant-Six-Engines-Rebuild/dp/1613254326 The people at slantsix.org are really helpful!

Well I had a /6, 904 find me. Definitely not as common as dirt like they used to be, and when I do they aren't a dime a dozen any more either. But as things turn out, I had a /6, 904 find me. Dunno yet if I'm gonna use it, was offered to me as a good core. For all the 727 haters out there, I may pull it apart and see what shape it is in. I just haven't had good luck with 904s I kill em without even trying. Just (what 98%would call normal driving) and they haven't done well for me.

Slants are cool because they are unique. You find a few off the beaten path engines in the comp classes. A couple centuries ago a guy named JP Keck (?) ran a 300 cube Ford six in one of the gas classes. He cut up 3 Ford Cleveland heads and welded them together to make one head, put it all in what looked like a Pro Stock Pinto and the thing flew. Unique builds like that are very cool. Today builders seem to have lost that kind of vision and just LS swap everything, BORING!
Good for you for sticking with the slant, have you considered cutting up some small block Eddy heads for it? Turbo charging it?

That's really cool! My first job other than mowing lawns for myself was at a Marina. I was the kid that did anything and everything. As the boss was showing me around we walked by the travel lift and the first thing I noticed was this HUGE thing had a slant six! It was an oldie. For those of you who don't know what a travel lift is here's a picture of a newer one but same design.

I've owned 5 slantys of various years. Every single one of them left me stranded. Two of them, neither myself or an actual mechanic could figure out what the heck was wrong with them (both were in PU's). In disgust, one truck ended up with a sledgehammer thru the windshield then sent to the crusher. The other was sold off for pennies on the dollar because emission laws at the time would have made a V8 swap too much.

I'm not gonna bash on someone if they can make it work, but, I'll never own another (unless I was doing a V8 swap).
