This is Paul Rossi's old carhauler.
1976 Dodge D800 medium duty. Timperman Bros. Box.
413, 5 speed, 2 speed rear, air brakes.
According to Dave Koffel Sr., who was head of Chrysler drag race program at the time, Mopar built 7 or 8 of these and handed them out to their factory backed super stock racers at the time: Rossi, Leal, Hagen, etc.
I bought it 2 years ago from a Louisiana racer who had bought it from Rossi.
I contacted Paul to learn more about the truck and he told me an interesting story: When asked why the VIN shows the truck as a D600 - 1.5 ton, yet all the equipment on the truck is from a D800 - 2.5 ton, he had this explanation. The D800 with air brakes would require a CDL. The factory backed teams often had many different truck drivers and not all of them had a CDL. To circumvent the log book problem, Chrysler rebadged the trucks as the lighter GVW D600 and thus put them in the non-CDL catagory ( sort of). While of questionable motive, the ruse worked and none of the teams had trouble from the law.

The attached pic was posted earlier on by someone. That's at least 1 of the worst blown TFs I've seen and wonder how the driver ever escaped injury. Were they using any type of protection at all with the automatics back then such as a plate on the floor or a blanket of some sort? I've seen a few old pics of blown gassers circa 69-70 that appear to have trans blankets hanging down. I've seen a few TFs with chunks of the sides out or bellhousings split and case with top removed but that pic really takes the cake. Wonder someone didn't lose a leg on that one. Looks like most blew downward but surely there had to be some penetration of the floorboard with a blowup like that.

That is actually a SuperStock car. In the days before high stall speed converters, the hot ticket was to rev the motor to your chosen RPM, with the trans in neutral - then (you guessed it) pull her into low. Worked good most of the times, but sometimes real excitement happened. I think the car pictured is Mancini. But Dick Oldfield did that at the Nationals and when it blew, it almost lifted the whole car off the ground. Then it would take a boatload of oil-dri before the track was anywhere ready again. Shortly after that neutral starts were banned.

Stewart, didn't the ClutchFlite essentially wreak the same sort of blow-up potential on the TFs as a neutral drop?

I don't think the ClutchFlite was as bad as neutral starts --- I do know that the Missile Challenger worked long and hard to get a CF to work, but they were not reliable. A weakness in the cases would cause the case to crack.

I now have the car that is seen in that picture. Believe it or not, NOTHING went through the floor. It does look like someone took a hammer to it and beat the death out of it though. I had often wondered why the floor was so beat like that. Then I slowly figured the car's history out and traced it back to Mancini. Then I received that pic!

I remember a what I think was a 65 Dodge B/FX car. I think it was a 366 ci Hemi with a clutchflite. I think it was called the RoadRunner. It had a belt driven pump. I think it was orignally factory backed. I saw it at Ted DeTar's shop in Wichita. Don't know what happened to it after that. Lot's of "I thinks" because it was in 1966!

I've seen pics of that car all over the place including in a few recent Larry Davis books. Sharp car. And until looking at Steve's site I hadn't known who it was.
