It would make sense.

I work a lot with 3D Printing.

Laser sintered metal technology and plasma spray depositing has changed the game in many ways. Metal parts can be made reasonably quick and dependable. There is a guy who 3D Printed a 45 caliber Colt 1911 pistol and has shot thousands of rounds through it dependably. Rocket nozzles are another item being made with 3D printing.

I see many parts we can not fathom being made now, 3D Printable in a few years. Hemi Blocks in your basement anyone?

Whether or not it's feasible depends entirely on the metallurgical requirements of the piston in question. This is a constant for any stressed metal part. If you can meet the structural needs via 3D printing, then you can do it. I would have my doubts that an application that requires a lightweight forging can be met with a printed metal piece. But, if a sand-cast or die-cast piston can provide the necessary qualities, then a 3D printed one might do the trick. It will always boil down to the actual structural stresses and requirements.
