Pulling it down hill with no brakes might have had something to do with it...
If the toy doesn't have any brakes, and you have to drag it down a hill, how would you keep it from rolling into the tow vehicle, and how do you keep it from rolling in the wrong direction on a series of tight turns? Its not like you can slow it down or stop it by stepping on the brakes.
Sure, if they had a piece of pipe or something to put over the tow rope/chain to keep the distance between the two trucks spaced a specific distance apart, it would have been a different story. That probably isn't something you would expect to carry on mountain climbing off road. I suspect hiring a real towing and recovery company to recover it from way out in the sticks would probably have cost more then the truck was worth. Drag it to the bottom, take it home, and fix it. You have a great story to tell along with the dents to prove it.
Extreme off road has consequences, don't play the game if you can't handle the possible results. Gene

I would love to do that! Couldn't happen to a nicer vehicle... I pulled an International bread truck out of a snow drift this winter, stuck up and over the axles! I didn't think the 2015 Dodge would do it, but after a couple of yanks it came right out! The bread truck guy was very happy, he didn't want to call a wrecker and explain it to his company...

It doesn't look like there was anyway to upright the toyota where it was at. Needed to get to a flatter area.

Extreme off road has consequences, don't play the game if you can't handle the possible results. ^ This. I've recovered more than a few vehicles when off roading, and been recovered myself a few times. We were always careful, always cognizant of safety when doing so, but the reality is your rig might sustain more damage during the recovery. We'd get creative in attempts to save someone's rig...multiple recovery vehicles, snatch blocks, hi-lift jacks, you name it...but if we have to choose between saving additional damage from happening, and safety, we're choosing safety every time.

These guys should have watched more episodes of "Highway Through Hell". It may have gone better.

Why you would rescue a vehicle in this manner.... The Meathead should be thankful anyone volunteered to get his stupid 4ss out of there. Would have taken a helicopter to get it out right side up. You have to have more money than brains to take your vehicle off road when Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Honda make perfectly legit off-road vehicles.

Some clown did that with his Chivvy 4x4 in 1992, stuck it in a peat bog down the street from my house. It was there at least 5 years with it sinking in more an more and every single part that could be taken off, and every body panel beat to death, no glass left by the time they came in to redevelop the property. I am sure they were pissed having to finally get that hulk out of there. Was a nice truck went it got buried...LOL
