This is why magazine writers are on the bottom of my favorite list. I "borrowed" this photo from one of the "MOPAR" magazines. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE DEVICE IN THE PHOTO IS ?? THE WRITER SURELY DOES NOT.

Of course it is -- but your answer does not count, you are knowledgable - not some "newcollectorsuckup" magazine writer. Now part two of that question --- where could you get that mechanical shutoff --- hint - a combination of two well know speed merchants

Now I know what that is also. Have seen those in quite a number of engine pics on old drag cars but never really knew exactly what it was. Did they work well and how was it controlled by the driver?

I think SS/F was the lowest Super Stock class in 1968 so the Roadrunners would have run SS/F or SS/FA. As for the Stock classes, they ran E/S or E/SA in 1968 and F/S or F/SA in 1969. I had a '68 Sports Satellite 330 HP 383" 4 speed car that ran F/S in 1968 and G/S in 1969. Rated at 5 HP less than the RR and about 50 advertised lbs. more than the RR therefore one class lower. Were the 383 cars competitive. Mine was for awhile. Ran 12.60 on Carmen Rotunda's 12.73 national record. He eventually set the record at 12.34 and I was no longer competitive. I don't think the RR's were ever competitive in the class they had to run.

I know this is not a Mopar but i'm looking for pics of a Chevelle my cousin raced in B/MP around the early 70's. The car was a 427 4 spd, his name is Vernon Foyt and he lives in Minnesota, at that time, he lived in Coon Rapids.
I would really appreciate anything on this or any links that might help.
He lost the car in a fire, so doesn't have any pics

12.34 Ah, ya I'm sure it did get a little hard to keep up with that. That doesn't sound too much slower than the equivalent SS 383 cars at that time. They must have just been better at cheatin than you ram87.

I don't think the 383 Super Stockers fared very well. In '68 they ran the same SS class as the 440 GTX's. Of the stockers, mine was one of the better running 383's but it fit in the class better than most cars. The weight/hp class break for my car was 10.50 and my car factored at 10.53. The 383 RR's class break was at 10.00 and they factored somewhere around 10.22. Remember, the stocker ran on a maximum 10" wide slick and the SS cars could run on a 10" tire. That was a major difference.

ram87, so it wasn't so much that they didn't run well generally, but were I assume at the lower end of the class weight/factor wise. 12.60s for a stocker RR sounds pretty good to me from back then, but I assume the 440 GTXs were going a bit better than that in stock class. I know the 440 SS/F GTXs ran in same class as the Z28s but all the old ET and MPH #s I see that the 440 Mopars always quicker and faster than the SB Camaros, like 11.70s at 115-119 for the GTXS compared to 12.0s and 11.90s at 112-114 for the Chebbies. Dave Stricklers Z28 was dominant but it didn't run the #s the GTXs in same class ran.

Eric, Yeah it was a lot different in '68. No such thing as adding or removing weight to make a class. My Sports Satellite's advertised shipping weight was 3475 pounds and the 383 in my car was rated at 330 HP. Same engine as the RR's rated at 335 HP but supposedly my exhaust system was more restrictive hence the 5 HP difference. Of course we all ran headers so that negated the 5 HP difference real quick. My weight/hp factor put me in the top of F/S in '68 and the RR's weight/HP put them in the middle of E/S. Again this is where we were and you couldn't be lighter than advertised shipping weight. The SS 383's were not competitive because they were factored the same and because SS/F was the lowest class that's where they ran. Unfortunate because the 440 GTX's weight factor put them in the same class. In '68 and '69 the RR's had to spot me .1 sec. and we were running identical cars almost.

Bad deal for RR racers, especially considering that was the debut year of those cars. BTW, nice truck. Got any old pics of the F/S Satellite?

Here's a few pics of a 68 GTX I found on 'net. Classed as D/stock. I think it may have belonged to Tim Eckstrand who later teamed up with Bob Lambeck on some SS cars.

Eric, My car was the same color as Eckstrand's but had a different hood, no GTX stripes, a white interior with green trim and a little less lettering. I lived in Mississippi at the time and had the car painted bronze just before I move to Indiana in '69. I painted the car black in '70 just before I sold it.
