Yet when you watch him in one of his movies he seems so mild-mannered that it’s hard to relate him being such a bada$$!

Came home and Hollywood found him and he made a bajillion movies, Mostly westerns and of course war movies. Mental issues set in and it didn’t end well. Sad. But when the chips are down hand that guy a burning tank and 50 caliber and he cleans up really well!

Saw a biography on him. He had his own bedroom in the garage, due to his nightmares. Calling out his buddies names in his sleep.

I've said it many times, there is a reason they were called "the greatest generation". Absolutely!

These Men and Women can't do and see the things that happen in war and not be affected by it.

I've said it many times, there is a reason they were called "the greatest generation". Absolutely agree. They were giants. They had a job to do - revenge, & they did it in the face of death with no regrets. I remember many of the kids' dads in the neighborhood who were WW2 vets. They did not put up with any sh*t from anybody. My dad was about a year too young, but he still enlisted in the Navy in late 1945 - the draft was still on. He was at Great Lakes for about 9 months before receiving a medical discharge. I always tried to get him to document his experiences there as I always loved the stories, but he never did. RIP dear dad. He departed the Northern wasteland 12/4/19.

whenever I am outside on a cold snowy day, and only a few feet from the comfort of my home, I wonder what it would be like to be in a foxhole or trench in similar conditions- with no idea of when the situation would end.
Not even a do this post for four hours, and you will be relieved to get some hot food and warm shelter. My uncle started at Normandy, all thought the Bulge, death camps. If I endured that, I would have made a point to never be cold again. Arizona, or Florida here I come.
When a younger relative would say " I don't think I could have done what you did", they generally replied "yes, you would" Most of them didn't see themselves as anything special.
Shout out to the WW2 Canadian soldiers too. Like the US they decided it was for the good of mankind to become involved.

On this note, let's keep the thread going.
Any members have a Medal of Honor recipient in their family? My wife has a third cousin, Commander Eugene Fluckey. Commanded the submarine Barb. Received MOH and four Navy Crosses. I suspect he was the second highest decorated WW2 service man.
A friend has a GG uncle; Manomen O'Donnel awarded the Medal for action at Vickburg (the campaign my family was in, too).
Sammy Davis lives in the area. He knew Commander Fluckey from their MOH get-togethers. Said Fluckey kept him on the straight and narrow. They used his award ceremony for the superimposing of Forrest Gump.
