I would watch the deck height after bore and honing and deck. 84 cc heads might push your compression up more than you would like.

What year is the block? Might consider a stronger rod?

Robert

Block is 69 vintage. Original engine. Would 3 inch exhaust be too big? Engine should make about 550 hp

The block will be more than fine, any year would do, the block issue is the most overblown thing I have seen.

Rods will be fine if machined right, but might cost close to a new set so check it out. Would make it easy to go to the .990 pin.

3" might be a bit much, but won't hurt other than maybe kill a small amount of low end torque. If you want it loud that would do it though.

What is the advantage of the .990 pin?

It saves a ton of rotating weight in the engine. It isn't something to sweat if you keep the stock pin, which is somethign like 1.07

You might ask what it will cost to bush your stock rods to that size but don't spend a bunch to do so.

.990 is stock big block Chevy size, and those pins hold gobs of power. The Mopar pins were overkill, you know, normal for Mopar stuff of the day

Most aftermarket rods come with that size, it is a very common pin size in new pistons as well.

That is stong combo.I would shoot for no more than 10.5-1 with that cam.Watch your timing curve.
I would run the 3" if you have to buy a system. It will support future upgrades if you plan to.It won't hurt low end much but will help the top end.Go with some turbo style mufflers to keep the noise down if that is a concern.

How much is Indy going to charge for the port work? Might be worth a call to Dwayne Porter(fast68plymouth on here). He has as good of a name as there is in the hobby and you won't be a number on a file there.

Should work well, although with that cam and that intake I would probably want more than a 3.54 gear but being a 4 speed I'm sure it'll be fine.

I like this combo alot.

I think it is a nice real life build for a 354 geared street car.

BUT, I think you will need more cam(duration) to see over 500hp.

The rest of the motor is ready for it (worked heads etc)

I don't think you want more cam with these gears, and a 4 speed street car. I'm just saying this will probably be just a hair under 500.

And dont' worry about the comp being too high. Heads are aluminum, so it won't get too high.

My .02.

Id shoot for a minimum for 10.5 comp with the aluminum heads. Ditch the cam and get a solid around 250 duration at .050. That hyd cam you listed is a baby, to me anyway. The SD is a good intake, no problem with it.

My car weighs 3800 lbs, using a comp 259@.050 solid, with no quench whatsover. 10.6 compression. Ported 452's. Ive had 3.23's, 3.55s and 4.30s in the car. Car runs fine with all 3 ratios. I honestly cant feel a big seat of the pants difference between any of the ratios. Acts just fine on the street.

I agree your combo wont make 550 HP. As planned Id say more like 450 or so. My stuff might make 525 if Im lucky.

72 RR, Pump gas 440, 452s, 3800 lbs, Corked, ET Radials,. 11.33@117.72. Same car, bone stock 346s, 9.5 comp, baby solid. 12.24@110.

I agree its a nice combo and as was said a nice solid cam would give it more power. I use 10.0 comp with 906 heads and i have good quench. I also use the MP .557 solid in my 63's 440 and it is is around 250 at .050. My eng is close to 500 hp and it has pushed my 3700 lb 63 to 11.50's so far. I believe you will be making closer to 450 to 475 hp with that cam. But it is a good build that should run fine its just that a nice solid cam will wake it up more. Good luck with it as you will have a nice running car. Ron

Combo looks good, fairly simular the the CarCraft Edelbrock headed 440 built many years ago that made 535 HP, and really good torque (with unported heads.)

I don't believe the numbers that mag articles throw out on engine builds ESPECIALLY if the engine was run on the HAPPY WESTECH DYNO . No way that build above is going to make 550HP with that tiny HYD. cam . Also if you are shooting for 550HP ditch the stock rods , it makes zero sense to run them considering the low cost of better quality replacements available .

Check out a carb website and company called AED in Richmond Va --New Holley 750 HP all hand built for just a little more than the Demon--The Demons are OK if you get a good one if not don't count on BG to have any mercy on you--The AED Holleys are fantastic! They come out of the box about two jets rich for my stuff but are wonderful carbs! Check them out! AED customer service can't be beat!

check out 440 Source Platinum Series I-beam rods before you spend any $ on the stock rods.
The rest you will be very happy with.

It's probably just me, but those Indy-worked heads kinda throw up a red flag. I guess I'm just spoiled by MCH.

Thanks all. The cam came from an old Car Craft 440 build article as some have noted. I have a set of Indy EZ heads but they won't fit under the hood. I will look into a solid cam and better rods. Thanks again.
