I make it a point to climb the distillation columns of every plant I work on. I've done them all but one as it was a freezing rain ice storm the two days I was there. I am afraid of heights so its a personal challenge for me. I made the mistake of looking down on one column when I was near the top. I usually only look slightly up tp see next rungs of ladder. That was a hard one. I sort of froze up. And holding myself up on a ladder was tough on the muscles. Anyway a few breaths and back up I continued. The views are spectacular. Most of our columns are 220' to 270' tall. And 14' diameter or square. They sway on breezy day. I'm not sure I could do the light bulb change on that tower. Probably not.

Did I see this correctly? Are they not tied off once they start climbing the tower, until they get to the top and hook up? All I saw as they were climbing was the belt.

Apparently. that was the tie off. I used to climb wind turbines, no elevator in them, and did plenty of double hook climbing, but never with a belt.

I free climbed towers and poles all the time as a lineman. It's against the rules now. Using a belt to climb a pole which we called hitchhiking is a lot more effort and will wear you out. Double belting is encouraged. You have 2 belts and when to come to an attachment you put the second belt over it before you undo the lower belt. A real pain and not always safer.

Yeah, the safety guys never have to live with thier mandates. My grandfather used to be an ironworker and some of the stories he told made me cringe. Those guys would have laughed at that video.

Any ideas to the location of that tower?

Big Dad, you stop accelerating after the first 120 ft. free falling, 1500 ft. fall hurts just as bad as a 130 ft. fall shruggy whistling grin
I use to climb telephone polls, not power poles. Telephone lines and cables are usually installed around 21 Ft. above the ground on the poles, I slid (burnt) down one from that height, it filled my chest and arms full of splinters. I don't remember any of that slide, I do remember thinking oh SH--! I'm in trouble now when I started to slide down it, I do remember being on my knees on the ground next being very mad rant
That pole was my third that morning on that job, I was part of 3 man crew, the working foreman was suppose to climb that one and do the work on it, I should have been his groundman helping him get the parts up the pole. I was getting off early that day and he decided to make me, a apprentice, climb it instead rant down
I did have to climb some poles a lot higher than that, we installed steps on a 90 ft. once after it was put up, If I'm remembering correctly I think it had righ t 5 1/2 or 6 Ft. in the ground to hold it so we had to climg around 78 Ft to our feet and climbers to install the 2 sets of working steps at 78 Ft above the ground, that one got my attention shock shruggy
Within a year I saw a power line crew stepping one of their 60 Ft. poles on the ground before setting it in the ground, boy where we stupid realcrazy whiney
I slipped, cut out, on three or four more times in my climbing career, I manage to get a climber back into all those polls before sliding down very fall boogie, experience is a great teacher up

I'm not sure how it would have happened but I know that I would have perished before I got to the top. I'm guessing I would have starved to death after I froze and was clinging to the tower for a couple of weeks. Of course, I would have had the support of my family and friends as I died because I would only be about 50 feet off the ground when it happened.
