Upon disassembling my 1969 383 block I noticed there was no gasket on the oil pump...since then I saw a guy on youtube talking about cleaning the oil pump before re install and he had a gasket...I bought a good quality gasket set for the rebuild and it did not have an oil pump gasket, so my question is does the pump go back on the block without a gasket ?

Supposed to be a gasket between the pump housing and block. There iare transfer passages between the block and pump that is under suction and pressure.

I think your right about that...I was just puzzled why there was no gasket when I removed the pump and to add to my confusion there was no gasket for the pump in the gasket set I bought...I can get a gasket off Ebay for $14.00 plus shipping..kind of robbery for a gasket, but I'll have to suck it up I guess...

Opening a pump package and finding no gasket - happened to me a short while back.

Go to most auto supplies and buy a sheet of thin gasket material and make your own.

Trace the imprint of the pump on to paper then transfer to the gasket material.

Or simply lay the gasket sheet on to the pump after cutting a hole in it for the pilot then go around all the holes and perimeter and tap with a small ball peen hammer and that will actually cut the gasket for you.

I would jump on the pump maker company and insist they provide it to you for no charge
The guy who put that motor together with a stock type pump shouldn't be allow anywhere near another motor build
Some of the better after market race pumps come with O rings instead of using a gasket, that works well also
