I have always run a regular 18" fan water pump driven,, Now that i have added a vacum pump, the drive manderel is in the way of a fan, I have to switch to electric. SO, i see a lot fo 16" fans in Jegs etc, what is a good cfm rating??? 2000? Yea its a big block, and used to run about 180-ish with a 180 t stat on a hot day so,,.,,,

I always thought you wanted 3000 CFM of airflow through the radiator core for proper cooling...and to use a fan with a shroud so that you're pulling air through the entire core, instead of just an 18" circle

my big block dakota has a single core aluminum radiator that's like 20"x24" and I have a 19" electric fan on it with a shroud that's around 20x22, and it cools me down just fine.

How much room do you have between the waterpump and the rad?

My 68 Dart with an RB doesn't have alot of room there, so I had to offset the 16" fan towards the driver's side. Not ideal, but what can you do? Don't really want to cut the rad support to gain extra room.

The HHR setup is a good one though, and can be ordered from your local chebby dealer for about $60, and comes with a shroud.

my opinion....find an OEM fan that fits your radiator. They usually flow much more than most aftermarket units and cost much less too.

HHR, ford taurus 3.8 V6, Lincoln/mark IV are all popular choices for example.

If space permits it is always better to have your fan operate as a "puller" by mounting it on the water pump side of the radiator. A "puller" electric fan is approximately 15% more efficient than a "pusher" electric fan.

from Becool.
I'm currently changing the fan around on my car to pull rather than push.
some modification required!

Thanks for all the replys so far, im going to check out the HHR fan, ill see just how much room i have when i get the motor back in the car. HHR is a little big at 4.5" some 16" fans in Jegs are only 2.5"

THANKS

You want ATLEAST 3000 cfm if you ever street drive it. I had a 16" zirgo that pulled 3000 cfm and it wouldn't keep up. Partially b/c of the radiator I had at the time, but the 2005 Viper fan I replaced it with does a MUCH better job. I have a big Griffin radiator now so no more troubles. CHIP

Note that amperage draw varies widely - some need a 40 amp circuit. You'll need a decent alternator. The 2000CFM fan on my drag car does a pretty good job, but of course the car only runs for minutes at a time; I don't think I'd use the same setup in traffic or in hot weather.

Good post. I'm looking at going to an electric fan myself. Does anyone have the dimensions of an HHR fan?

The hhr fans is great but it pulls alot of amps.
The spals are the best of the aftermarket junk.

I had a SPAL dual 11 inch with shroud mounted on a BeCool rad for my Charger, They cleared the stock pulleys and pump but when I installed the March serpentine pulleys, it moved the power steering forward and ran into the shroud. BeCool claims that the rad I had with those fans would cool 700HP. Same fan setup with a larger Rad was supposed to be good for 1000HP. I replaced the Dual Spals with a dual fan setup from a '90 Contour (or was it '95) that offsets the two dans and it now fits. The SPALs are for sale in the classifieds here if you are interested.

and try and find a fan that covers the complete core I looked at an HHR fan but it was too small to cover my whole rad so I ended up with a fan assembly of a 95 Caravan fit the whole core and pulls a ton of air.

16x24x3.25 Fits the rad pretty well with only an inch and a half of the core open at the bottom.

I ended up moving my radiator in front of the rad support. I use a 16" flexalite syclone fan with a dakota digital electronic controller. I can get it to run any temp i want just by setting the controller. here is a pic if you want to see a better one let me know i will take some tomorrow.:

I used 4 10" fans and have nearly 100% core coverage (1500-1750 cfm each IIRC). One fan is on a thermostat and the others are on manual switches so I can control them as necessary. Car runs cool on 90*F days
