After 1000 miles of breakin and daily clatter for the first few miles (every time), I pulled them. Comp 8921 HD rollers. Of the 16, four lost prime by the time I popped the Sniper intake off. They were still hot. So will try Hughes. Nothing but a street rally RV type build. More to follow. Phish

Yeah, please update this thread when you can. I've got about 5k on my build with a 230@.050 Comp roller kit. It sounds like a damn diesel. At first I thought it was just normal as it's my first aftermarket retrofit roller motor, but after reading these threads and hearing other cars with different brand setups this makes me nervous.

Dunno what's up with Comp, they used to be a dependable source. But between their infamous 20 mile fuel pump pushrods and several other experiences I'm beginning to think they are sliding downhill. I've got a customers motor with less than 100 miles on it. It ate the # 1 & 3 cylinder lifters. The rest are all picture perfect I am curious to tear it down and see who's camshaft is in it Friend had a BB Comp XE268 eat TWO EXACT SAME cams and lifter on a run stand within minutes. Summit took back the first and had the 2nd within a few weeks. Took back the 2nd too. I felt bad and sold him a NOS MP 272 purple cam and lifters I had on the shelf for 20 years. No problems whatsoever. He made some calls to industry friends and no one was surprised at all. Seems Comp’s quality has gone really down since they were last bought out

OK, the Hughes lifters arrived and the plunger height is taller but a high quality unit. The oil band is wider as well (good thing) and instructions say to NOT soak in oil. We have taken measurements and will have Smith Bros. make shorter ball cup pushrods Monday. Comp 8.71 pushrods with their lifter, we need 8.34. This was a police motor so high idle time we presume. The comp lifters show some mild scuffing so we are checking the lifter bores. Also thinking of adding a PRW shaft/rocker kit up top as using stock shafts ebay used Isky rockers, no roller tip. Move some money around, keep Ameica great. Be back when we fire it up again. Phish

It appears Comp has changed hands twice in the last 6 years.

Well, let me get the lifter companys out from under the bus possibly. Tried a set of Howards and it is worse. Was quite for about 10 miles then one must have colapsed. At least Comps eventually got quite. So we are pulling the intake and dizzy. Will prime motor with a drill while we roll the engine and check each one for prime/hold etc. Also mic the lifter bores as well. I am changing the rockers and shafts as they were used. It will now be new pan to carb. Running out of ideas and funds..... good thing Great Race was cancelled. We were to be in San Antonio today. Jake

It appears Comp has changed hands twice in the last 6 years. Since when? I remember them buying Lunati several years ago and I think they sold that company later

I've always felt the two biggest problems with comp cams is their components and the idiots on the phone. I try to avoid them. That seems to cover everything.

Thanks for the link , I did not know of this deal I have seen a lot of good Hi Po company get bought out by "private equity firms, I fear they are going to end up putting the screws to all of us hot rodders and racers in the name of increased profits in their pockets Frankly it startled me to read that they already had Edelbrock. Are these companies cashing out because they know something about the future of aftermarket parts that we don't know yet? "Private Equity Firm" is that the politically correct name for Corporate Raiders?
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

IMO, Performance aftermarket retrofit hyd roller lifters aren’t going to give you the same kind of quiet operation you’d get from an OE HR cam & lifters. The more aggressive the lobe profile is, along with the higher spring loads usually associated with that type of cam....... the more noise you’re going to get. This is one of the better HR FAQ pages I’ve seen: https://www.gatermanproducts.com/faqs.html

I felt bad and sold him a NOS MP 272 purple cam and lifters I had on the shelf for 20 years. No problems whatsoever. Typical in day-age. 40+ year old craftsman hand tools that have gone thru He11 & Highwater better then new stuff today. Same with power tools. Seems older mopar cams better then "new" stuff today. Sad.

Comp has gone to crap. My machinist won't use anything from them anymore. Has just build a Chevy boat motor and the new Comp roller rockers ball and cups totally destroyed after a few hours. 2nd motor this has happened to. Been having problems with their lifters for a while now. I have Comp cam in my 440 That I think is wiping a lobe.
