Well, for first time in YEARS, I decided to take a walk thru the local pick a part yard . . . sad to say, there was only about 6-8 rows (why are they always furthest back in the yard ?) of 8-9 mopar vehicles. Pretty much 2002 and up . . . found ONE "old" car - 1980 Aspen RT . . . sorta surprised to see it there. 2door, 318 2bbl, console auto, buckets . . . decided to go back with my tools and pull off a few pieces that are kinda generic for 80 . . . then decided to grab the console, shifter & linkage, and then cut out the floor section of the tranny tunnel with the console brackets . . . . still more parts on that car, don't need them, but seems a shame to let them sit there - buckets are still there, course they need foam and to be recovered. But they are all there . . .

Anyway, it just made me feel "old", between seeming to take more time/effort than I figured it would to get everything, and the lack of any cars I still think of as new. . . well, just sign of the times !

How are the local yards in your area(s) ???

The late John Baughman had an older Mopar section in his U-Pull It yard in York up to when he retired and sold the business off a few years ago. Most of the cars were pretty well picked over, but I always found whatever I went after (usually odd and end type stuff...clips, trim screws, etc.). Even when I did pull bigger ticket items such as trim, interior pieces, and a lot of exterior stuff off a '66 Coronet...John was always more than fair on his prices. There might be some leftover stuff in the yard, but I'm pretty sure it's mostly all gone now. John will certainly be missed as well.

That is sad to hear...I never knew John had passed.
Years ago while at Chryslers @ Carlisle we drove to his place late one Thursday afternoon and I pulled the 4 pieces of side tinted glass from a 64 Fury he had in his yard for my car.
I traded him an original set of shaker scoop grills he needed and that is all he wanted.
I remember he let us roam up in a loft he had and there were two A12 air cleaners but he wanted to keep those.

I was out at our closest yard for the first this year this past weekend and got a couple things I was after. They have pretty slow turn over so I don't go there too often.
There was another yard that was minutes away that I used to go to whenever I had free time. Then Then they started charging an admission fee... not worth it when quite often I left empty handed and I was only going there to kill some time. Now they moved and what what used to be 45 minutes of time to get there and browse and get home is an all afternoon event so I haven't been to that place in a while.

All the yards in town are mostly 90's and up. They only have so much space so they have to crush vehicles at some point. If they do get an old car it gets picked clean pretty fast.

The yards out of town have lots of land and that is where the old cars are at. This place is huge. Nobody can possibly walk thru it all in a day.

The last trip was 3-4 years ago. My wife likes to come and brings her mechanics gloves. But if she brakes a nail I have to pay to get them fixed.
She found an A-Body with the hole in the floor for shifter and says it says it is H Code.
Driveline long was gone but the rear end was in it. She asked the guy how much if we pulled it he says $100.00. So we pull it guy pass's by and says He is getting it to the front for us so we do not have to tote it.
Guy drives up and I have a 100 in hand but she says to me it is missing a drum and brake parts, So he says $80.00
It was an 8 3/4 with 355:1 Dana Power Lock when I opened it up
We went to another yard 10 min away and they had a truck with 8 3/4 391:1 Dana Power Lock
2 Real Ram Charger wheels 15x8 on a rusted 78-79 15 bucks each. Also grabbed some M body Steelies the same 15 that looked the same in 15x7 grabbed 6 of them.
Some Caddy Calipers for TSM conversion Disc Brake Cores
A Body Front Disc Brake Spindles and control arms. Pile of Body Bolts and me being silly "Fuses" and other small parts.

Pick and pull yards are one of my guilty pleasures. But I am looking for OBVIOUS brand new parts of decent quality. I google the part number and pass if t is an ebay $35 new alternator for example. Starters alternators struts brakes. You'd be surprised how many times an owner has repairs done on their older car and then for whatever reason that car ends up in the yard. Love those Weather Tech trunk liners.

Keep old mopars alive.

When its cooler out I like to just wander around Pick-A-Part yards. Numerous times over the years I've come across vehicles where it looked like someone was trying to fix it and just gave up but left the new parts sitting inside. Most recent one was an old Jeep Wagoneer that really didn't look bad from the outside. Inside were polyurethane mounts/pieces strewn everywhere. I found the remains of a box that showed they were part of a body mount kit? I looked under the rig, and a bunch of the factory mounts were missing. I thought about gathering up the pieces but realized they looked nothing like the stock mounts that remained. Maybe the last owner had the same realization and just gave up? shruggy

Good points made. Sometimes a car is in the yard as the result of a mechanics lien. They get repairs then decide to skip payment. I've bought rebuilt heads, new brakes, radiators and such far cheaper than paying to have mine rebuilt.

I was at L&L last fall. I'd say I walked around at least 90% of it while I was there.
