How & where on the line were these painted for the '68s ?
Were the scoops already installed, maybe loose ?
I know about the organisol paint, I'm curious about the procedure the factory used.
I suppose an unrestored original hood would show the pattern at or under the scoops.
Any photos out there of a hood with its scoops removed ?

These numbers are measured off an original 68 Road Runner with the Performance Hood Treatment option. The rear of the blackout starts at 2" from the back of the hood as measured from the middle. The forward "peak" of the blackout will measure 32.25" from the same rear of the hood reference. I have measured a few different hoods while researching my 68 Runner and the numbers only vary about 1/8". The scoops get painted black and underneath the scoops they had the paint line split across the outer mounting holes.
Scoops painted separately. We used Hot Rod Black (SEM) vice organisol. Mine were painted about 12 years ago and still fine.
I found a few pictures from when the car was just painted - hopefully they will help you out.

Excellent info, Jim, thanks very much - I was hoping you'd post.
What I was curious about was if the factory had the scoops off, spaced, or installed on '68s, not that it matters much.

Your front measurement is interesting, as the diagrams I've seen say 30".
But I'm aware that the front angle matches or keys off of the hood's front shape, so I'd primarily trust that.

I think lots of times, pieces like that were painted at the manufacture and shipped to the factory already painted. Then the factory only had to worry about painting the hood.

Probably the one area I cheated on was painting the inserts fully (top and bottom) vice most inserts just being painted on the top and some small overspray on the bottom edges. The hard part about the 68 inserts was the engine callout plate hardware and plastic gaskets. It took some time to gather the unique screws from various members on Moparts. I think years later I helped out another member with a couple that I had left over.

Totally agree, and knowing that with my '68 rr and especially the callout plate attachment screws I made sure I documented the screws size and shape incase I misplaced or lost any of them. I still don't know if they are available??? I also took photos of other parts if anyone needs something.

I don't think the screws are available - certainly not 10-15 years ago when I was deep into my 68 RR project. I had heard that these screws were also used for 68 or 69 Dart tail lights and/or trunk trim maybe? The ones I got from an A body buddy were really close - correct length, threads, flat head phillips, etc. Just the face of the flat head was too big... They will work if you have nothing and want some for a temporary hold until you find the correct ones later. I have 6 of those if needed by someone. I'm sure a good machinist could make them but the market is pretty small.

Are those 1/4x20 thread? Looks like you could probably drill out and tap a regular 1/4x20 bolt to accept a small phillips head machine screw.

On second look, those are a lot smaller then 1/4x20.

I looked in the B-body hardware section but only found the nuts to secure the insert to the hood. Maybe I overlooked it??
The screw is an #8-32 x 3/8 flat head phillips. The face is much smaller than usual, just .210" diameter. The A body screw I mentioned previously has a .260" face. It works but does not sit flush with the side plate.

Those screws were GOLD even 30 years ago !
I've never seen them in another application, but there should be one out there.

I read this post again and just want to clarify a point. I said that the forward "peak" was 32.25" from rear of the hood. You said 30" from sources you saw. Just so no misunderstanding but the measurements I stated were from the same point at the rear of the hood exactly in the center. You do end up with 30"ish overall for the blackout. I checked 3-4 hoods that were still original and found that the 30.25 was most common. I have seen the 69 hood factory prints but never found one for the 68. I'm not sure if the factory would have masked and taped it off or if they used a common stencil that was laid over the hood for quick paint?? If you follow the crown of the leading edge for the scoops they naturally come to a point. I think that in the end if you get close and the layout works on your hood then go with it. The black helps break up the color and the brighter paint colors really sets if off (I think your car is the turquoise). I have to admit though that there was a black RR in Chicago with the blackout and it looked really sinister...I can't remember his name but hopefully he will see this and post a picture if he still has the car.

Yeah Jim, you're right. The patch is 30" from rear of patch to its front peak.
The guide I'm referring to is from Performance Car Graphics FWIW.
They also state 2.5" from rear of hood @ center to rear of patch. To me, the scoops' rear edge will dictate that.
I don't doubt there were variances, but bottom line is to lay it out with an eye to proportion.
I've never seen a factory blueprint for '68 like I have the '69, either.
Out of 11 (IIRC) '68 - '69 RRs I've owned, this is my 1st '68 with "the patch".
This one's Q1 like my last Hemi RR, though it's only a 383 car.
And yeah, that black Hemi RR is wicked; owned a black one way back, sold it... realcrazy

I missed these first time around - thanks for the link. The screws do appear to be correct.
