I picked up a 440 the other day and I'm looking for some help on identifying it. Its cast date is 4/2/68, the front pad is pitted but I can see HP2 on it but thats it the rest of the pad is pitted to bad to read. Where the vin would be on the side is blank? And I found a stamping on the bottom of the block beside the rear main seal starter side PT440P24980783. Does anyone know what that number is? The opposite side just has a B stamped on it.

Thanks for your help

If that is all you can find then you won't get too far. Late casting for the '68 model year but the 10,000 day number makes it seem like it did get used in a 1968 car. Would've been one of the very last ones for the '68 model year.

4*2*68 cast date (Monday)

HP2 = high performance (assembled) 2nd shift

PT440P24980783
PT = Trenton, MI engine assembly plant
440 = cu.in.
P = premium fuel
2498 = engine assembly date = Thursday May 30, 1968
0783 = engine unit number

the VIN should be stamped by the oil sending unit upper rear of block scope

it's a 1968 model year 440HP engine (375hp)

I thought the HP engines / engines that came on an R/T were stamped with an "S" PT440S special and the 350 horse got the "P"

good catch iagree pics would help work PT440P = 350hp & NO "HP" or VIN stamp and PT440S = 375hp & both "HP" & VIN stampings

the partial VIN A314791 would've been from an early June '68 "scheduled" Coronet R/T or GTX

Great so now I'm confused, is it an HP block without the S? Sorry I've tried to take pics with my phone and post but it always says they are to big.

only "HP" 440s were installed at Lynch Rd. for '68 "8A314791" (NO 350hp versions - all B-bodies: Coronet R/T & GTX ONLY))

only "HP" engines were VIN stamped in 1968

is it clearly a "P"? scope if so, it is an assembly line mistake or the other stampings are "after-the-fact" hammer email the pics & I'll post them dhead68@hotmail.com

it does appear to be a Lynch Rd. 1968 440HP with a "PT440P" VS. the expected "PT440S" shruggy
