Looking for input from the forum if you use a special storage container (e.g. wooden box) to store your engine hoist and engine stands when disassembled?

My engine hoist is a 70s/80s box steel design that does not fold up, but does come apart in (5) pieces (2 horizontal legs with casters at one end, center section with casters that houses the 2-legs and vertical posts and the final piece is the beam) and the hydraulic cylinder.

The engine stand consists of (3) pieces: I-Beam with casters, vertical beam/post that bolts to the I-Beam and the mounting plate (to attach to the rear of engine) with a round tube welded to it to slide into the vertical/beam/post.

Mine always end up sitting somewhere in a corner.
If you are wanting to do this to be able to store boxes vertical instead of a pile of metal pieces I'd figure out what size of box would hold it and then make a wooden crate that you can somehow attach wooden supports to fit inside it to keep the parts from falling all over. But the weight of those boxes would be too much to easily move around.

How much room do you have for storage , if allot hang it from the roof support or build a rack on the wall and store it like square tubing or under your work bench just a few ideas until we know your storage capabilities.

For about 15+ years, the engine hoist was disassembled with the long sections resting against the wall and marking up the drywall paint. With restored cars now home and the garage recently painted, I put the hoist back together to prevent damage. I was thinking of disassembling the hoist and building a wooden crate (with castors and hinged door) to hold the individual pieces.

The engine hoist is from the 80s with a wide opening to allow the engine stand to roll in with no issues. Some of the new engine hoists that fold up for storage have a narrow opening that restrict how far in that you can roll the engine stand in.

As for the engine stand, my father built it back in the 80s to hold his 440 engine. The base is made out of I-beam and heavy duty. The base is pretty wide (3-pieces of I-beam welded together: header, footer and one vertical beam attaching the two horizontal beams along with 4-castors). I recently had the engine stand media blasted and powder coated to preserve the bare metal. After looking at the engine stand yesterday, I may need to disassemble it and roll the base under a car. The other two sections of the engine stand (mounting plate and vertical post) can go in the wooden crate with the engine hoist.

I’ve had THREE diff cherry pickers over the years and I’ve found the FOLDABLE ONES well worth it over the others BECAUSE of the ease of storage. Jsta WHEEL IT into a corner ! Now the engine stand ... I got a JUGS 4 wheeler off of CL .... jsta UNBOLT it and tuck it away.

SELL yours ... up

A friend with a compact garage made a couple hinged brackets that attached to the wall under work bench, he set the long pieces on it and ran in screws to hold in place then pivoted it up under this bench top and had a couple wood toggles that rotated and kept the parts tucked up under bench. He had a couple of the other small parts and fasteners in a box on a shelf directly under the long parts.
