I'm looking at a '65 Dart BB track car build. I've received pics from several people that have done this swap and fabricated header for this combo. Not one has easy access to the plugs and most have some type of front tire rub went turning. The car has great rust patina and I'm thinking of removing the outer an inner fenders and running some cage outriggers to the front frame. I'd solve a lot of plumbing issues by fab'in some zoomie style headers. The motor will be a 440 with about 600HP. Any tuning issues or substantial lost of power with out collectors? Yes it will lose power, but the higher your VE is, the less collector you'll need.

You will loose power on any N/A motor with no collectors, how much and how bad will it affect the car I have no idea. I do know that getting the collector length correct can help a mid 11 second car pickup .18 ET lower and a little over 2.0 MPH gain I have a 1965 Dart also that will have a big C.I.(555) B1 motor in it to try and run Top Sport man N/A It will have 2 1/8 to 2 1/4 step headers with 4.0 inch merged collectors on it

It will lose some power but does it really matter? Exactly.

It will lose some power but does it really matter? Exactly. It will also sound weird but once again, does it really matter? I used to go to the track with some circle track guys and there was one car there that had weed burner zoomie type exhaust pipes. That car sounded horrible and always ran in the middle of the pack. Never knew what his deal was but I guess he liked his zoomie headers. I hated them but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

Zoomies are LOUD! An option is build fenderwells but create a box at the back of the wheelwell for the tubes and collecter. Worked well for me. You also wind up with a "step" to wrest your left foot on.

A benefit for zoomies: no need for those oh-so-tight radius bends to make the primary lengths leading to the collector equal. If you have the room: straight out at the port angle as far as possible before making any turn. Harley factory racing pipe for Sportsters: 8" radius from the port. Famous story: it's 1962. Mickey Thompson is watching as tuners install and modify conventional headers (Pontiac?) on a dyno stand, with minor and confusing results ("it's not supposed to do that!"). He heated up all 4 primaries on each side 4" away from the flange, and bent the entire system out away from the engine (sideways) and it picked up 50 hp. So much for "exhaust theory".
Zoomies are also far easier to change the length, and why do they need to be the same?

You also wind up with a "step" to wrest your left foot on. To the human ear they are but they will pass sound check easier than a collector as the directional mic used in these tests only seems to pic up one or maybe 2 of the pipes. Where as with a collector...well you get the picture. We have a 120db limit for 9.00 and slower vehicles here in the UK for sanctioned events BTW.
