The Lucas Semi Synthetic fluid is great fluid. its what PATC my converter builder said to use, over 5k miles of abuse, fluid still looks good. that said I have used Amsoil in other cars , dont have anything bad to say about it. with the Lucas mine shifts the same Hot or cold, with Valvoline non syn, it shifted hard cold.

Super Shift is their synthetic Type F. Good stuff.
I actually tested their regular multi-vehicle ATF in a Glide. Don't recall the number of runs - 50 maybe - and the high gear clutches had a little dark streaking on them from slippage. I believe that oil is just TOO slippery for a race unit.
Hyped or not, Amsoil is a good product. Their gear oil is all I use.
If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

any bad side effects from changing one synthetic brand to another ? or even going to cheap type F from synthetic ? Droping the pan and refilling will only get part of the old oil out. After a freshen up is the time to change.

Andy, I have used Amsoil trans fluid on many occasions and think its a great fluid, but it's not economical by any means . I have used many of their products mainly race oils or Harley oil. All good stuff. There's a lot of additives in their products, that is why it cost so much I assume. I just recently bought a case of the ATI syntactic super shift F I think it's called from Summit for $90/case. Gonna try it, I'm sure it will be fine. I believe that is JD Hy-Gard repackaged. Just what I've heard. One of the oils that have been recommended and used for big power automatic transmissions. I see Amsoil compressor oil as being another latest greatest oil to use.
If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

Getting a little off topic, the way I see it, the Differential I have, Strange engineering HIGHLY recommends Lucas gear oil & PATC my trans parts & converter builder recommends Lucas Racing ATF, I trust these companies that have to warranty the products they make & sell. I now run Lucas engine oil also. just my 1/2 cent

I have never tried the HyGard. Is it clear or red like the rest of the trans fluids out there? On the cheap I was gonna just buy a case of the old B&M trick shift. Can't be all that bad as I used that stuff back in high school in 1980 and they still make and sell that stuff. You didn’t get the memo that B&M Trick Shift is nothing more than Type F and blue dye? And a doubled price? That’s been pretty well established for at least 20 years.

After a freshen up is the time to change. with a valvebody, converter, and cooler change, there can't be much left inside can there ? ![beer beer](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/custom/beer.gif)

I guess it depends what you mean by better. I'm just interested in getting rid of the hard band on the 2-3 shift when the fluid is cold. The car shifts fine when the fluid is 120 degrees or warmer but if it less than 90 degrees it feels like the car got hit with a big hammer. Paul Forte told me that synthetic fluid isn't as temp dependent. He recommends Amsoil but I don't know anything about Amsoil. I think I'm going to try the Redline ATF. If it calms down the 2-3 shift when the fluid is cold then I'll think it is better. I think the syn fluid can improve the shift quality just because its slipperier.. JMO.. what I was referring to is that there are all the same other than syn oils
