So, I'm getting my headliner installed on the 1970 T/A. Correct me if I'm wrong but the sail panels are just straight cardboard. They are held in by the special curly clips. They have no fabric. The headliner fabric is NOT attached to the sail panels. It looks like their only purpose is sound deadening and insulation? Do I have that right? Thx

Correct, they are not covered in material.
The headliner pulls down over them and they are held on with clips.

They also serve as a backer.

Kids poking their fingers through the headliner material as one possibility.
