I'm posting this in the race forum in hopes that one of you guys encountered this problem and can maybe help me out.

Below are pics of the lifter bores of a '73 340. Notice the gap between the lifter oil band and the top of the lifter bore in the first pic. The cam is a Lunati solid with 582/582 of lift. The lifter is a Howard's solid EDM type. These pics are of a lifter at the top of the cam's lift in two bores side by side for comparison. The gap was MUCH larger with a roller setup.

What's the best fix? Bush lifter bores? Maybe a cam with slightly less lift?

You can have the cam re ground with a smaller base
circle or a smaller lift. There are some other lifters
that might work also but I'm not sure if they are
hydraulic

is the lifter loose in the bore or are you worried about the lifter coming out too far exposing the machined lifter groove at the top of the lift?

If you don't have to oil through the pushrod there should be a solid (no oil band) lifter availible. Comp and Hughes as well as others have sold these in the past.

I'm worried about the groove(oil band on the lifter) being exposed. I know from experience the oil just gushes out and you lose your oil pressure.

Do you know if anyone sells a solid body lifter with an EDM hole in the face of the lifter? They all seem to look like hydraulic lifters anymore...

Thanks MR P Body. I'll have to get in touch with him. Might be my best and cheapest option.

Pretty sure?? How long have I been on here?
I don't have any trick flat tappets. The old MP solid lifters were solid bodies.
I know of nobody that makes a solid body FT lifter with an EDM oil hole.
I can tell you, I never run edm hole'd ft lifters.
I either groove the lifter bores, and nitride the cam, or use high end (ferrea) lifters.
I prefer grooving the lifter bores and nitriding the cam and running correct oil.

How wide is the oil groove?? It would only bleed off oil pressure if when the groove is exposed it is also intersecting the galley.

Is that spot facing of the lifter bores normal ?

The howard lifters are actually AMC lifters and I think their oil band is slightly higher .

I've only seen a couple blocks mentioned that were hit that hard with facing. I've never had one personally. Must be a Friday block...lol

Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

I would put the oil pan and pump on with the filter, cam and lifters with the short block assembled and prime the motor to see how much the oil leaks past all of the lifters and if they leak bad or not. I have had un bush lifter bore blocks that leaked bad with high lift cams with roller lifters but none with solid or hydraulic lifters I haven't heard of anyne else that has had that problem either BTW, I do have a set of the early solid body lifters that have the smaller pushrod seat in them, not EDM though and probally can't make them EDM
