I had a 509 in my 70 Cuda with a 440. It must not of had enough compression. It was a real dog. I put a Comp Cam XE274H and it was like night and day. Very happy. It pulls hard from the bottom rpms to top.
So is this a good choice? Jim

XE268 or similar. It works very well from idle up. I think any smaller and you're leaving power on the table for no reason. But I also think the 274 is too much for it.
Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

That rpm range seems a little high for me. As far as the stealth heads, I'm not porting at this time, maybe milling them to get to 10 compression. I have a 4-speed with 3.23 gears, and my rpm range is probably above 1000-3000 for most of my street driving. Some of the Comp cams I'm looking at are: 256H, 260H, XE262H, 265DEH, 268H, & 275DEH. I'm not eliminating any other brands or grinds, but these are just from looking at their site. Jim

I run the XE262H in my 383, which is slightly "bigger" than the stock magnum cam. It performs very well for the street. With 275/60/15 on the rear, a 727 and 3.73 gears I can blow the tires off from an idle, from a stop. So, I'd think the XE268H would work about the same in a 440 as the XE262H in my 383... The 262 gives my 383 a nice noticeable muscle car idle.
The XE274H cam may work good for you too if your compression is at least a true 9 to 1.

Dont overlook the Lunati Voodoo cams. Cam's have come a long way in 40 years. And the 509 is a great cam still. But its not a nice street cam!The .475/.494 would be a great choice for your combo. It's low duration. Keeps the pressure and vacuum up. It doesnt need alot of gear either. I have it in my 72 New Yorker with 373's and i'll tell ya. It aint your grandpa's New Yorker! Great street cam!!!!

The Lunati 60303LK 226/234 @ 0.050, 0.494"/0.513" lift, 110 LSA would be a good pick, and it is one of the least expensive cam/Lifter kits at $180. If you are going for more power, the Comp XE275HL cam is really nice, 231/237 @ 0.050", 0.525"/0.525", 110 lsa, and the cam/lifter kit is only $210 from summit racing. The Hughes HEH2832BL3 cam (228/232 @ 0.050", 0.524"/0.540" lift 110 lsa) should give you the torque of the milider Lunati cam and near the HP of the Comp cam, but it is the most expensive at about $270 for cam and lifters. Anyhow thats my
