unwind to zero. see where the beam type rests ? zero as well. Neither of my clickers go to “zero”, one is 20 fp and the other is 20 ip IIRC. So I undwind them to their lowest setting. I dont have a clicker , one beam & one OLD Snap On dial

Un wind to the lowest setting, per USAF I have 7 different Snappy wrenches, some are 40 years old. Have been taken care of and maintained. This is the correct answer. Not needed or recommended to unwind past the lowest setting.
If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

I have been told since my first purchase in 1971 of a 1/2 inch Proto clicker torque wrench to always take the tension off of it when not using it I do I bought a Snap On later and I do the same thing with it as well as storing it in the plastic storage it came in All my clicker torque wrenches, 1/4,3/8 and 1/2 inch get stored with no preload on them.

I would totally use that on a $50 engine.
