This is a 74 slant with 70-80K on it? I am not sure. I got it on the stand and opened the pan.
Here is the bearing from #5 usually the one that craps out first.

Not steel wool, cloth! Here is the #5 journal.
Is it time to turn the crank?

When I drained the oil I found no bearing material in it. I do have some residual oil in the pan. Haven't checked that for metal. I did find part of a distributor gear in the pickup (plastic for all you non-slanters)

looks like a shop rag to me. wash it and see if its red (jk).
probably lost an oil cap at some time and they stuffed a shop rag into the oil fill hole. maybe it got caught and pulled in and eventually ended up in the pan

My punishment for changing the oil in it. Looks like I can get rod bearings from Advanced for $24 for a set. Autozone wants $11.99 per rod. Can't get the mains to come up on Advanced. They have a crappy website.
I am going to pull one of the mains to see what it looks like. I already have the new pump. Also have one that appears to have been changed on another engine.
Time to get greasy before I go to work at 1.

I doubt a rag could get sucked down. I am going to put some laundry detergent on it and see what it is. Sure was wrapped around the pick up tube.
I probably pull the pump and inspect it tomorrow morning. I would hate to put a new pump on it and then pump schrapnel through it.
These engines are hard to spin on a stand by yourself!!!!!

The marks on the crank don't really catch my finger nail when I drag it across. Should I polish this journal with some Crocus cloth? And go with a new bearing?
Considering it's a slant 6, that's exactly what I would do.
