I am building a dirt modified and want some opinions on a smallblock for it. Class rules call for 360 ci, 9.5 to 1, stock rockers (we are trying to get 273 adj. ok'd),cast iron 2bbl, flat tappet cam, iron heads, HEI dist, 2bbl rochester carb, and gasoline. What head would be the best, early 915 or later 308 or? What about cam with the 2bbl? Looking for some opinions, and there seem to be some good running small blocks around here
Help me make a Mopar competitive in the Chevy world!!

Are W-2 heads legal? (iron) Can the heads be ported?

I would definately run the 308 heads, or better yet try to get them to let you run magnums, the chevy guys will probably run vortechs.

Are you allowed to port the heads? If that was legal then a 302 or 920 head with 2.02 valves may work good, you can get plenty of flow to keep up with the 2bbl, sorta how the NASCAR guys run smaller ports on there restrictor motors. Also since it is a closed chamber head you can get some quench with out a reverse dome that makes dead space in the chamber, those two things together should give you lots tq outa the corners.

I am not causing global warming, I am just trying to hold off a impending Ice Age!

I would think w2's are legal, it says you must have original valve angle and location, that's all? What 2bbl manifold would you use?
I would think magnum heads will be legal as well. I have considered them and have been looking for some on the cheap. What intake would I use then? Can you drill an intake to fit?
I am trying to do this on a budget, funny I know! I have tons of x and j heads laying around as well as early 360 engines. I have talked to some chevy guys and they are going to run vortecs and some lightweight internals, but with an hei and a 2bbl, I think I can at least compete? If not I will just build a chevy and sell it all of and go back to drag racing.

We are not allowed to run the W2s on our 360 around here. We can run the x, j and even the T/A stuff. The beauty is they are ususlly chevy tracks, and there isnt a soal who even knows the difference between the W2 or the 915. On out 9 to 1 2 bbl engines we can run "stock" 360s. I know some 360 came out with w2s, but not enough to be considered "stock" around here. I would do what almost every mopar guy around here does. Run the Magnum heads on a 360 LA engine. plug the factory intake bolt holes on the magnums, and re drill the heads for the LA intake pattern. On our Late Model 2bbl engine we can run an R3 block, W2s, and 11:1 comp. These guys are getting 500 HP around here with a 355 chevy with a 500 holley 2bbl. Our mopar I am currently building for next year is easily going to be there. We can not port, but everyone acid ports, then throws the heads in the most humid place we can find and gets the heads all rusty. Yes its cheating, but is it really if EVERY person on the track does the same thing???

Dirt guys always find a way to "bend" the rule book. Smoky Unik was a master at it, and openly said it in HOT ROD that featured him in it a few months back.

If you can can you PM me some of the rules?? We can run roller rocker, revv kits, after market rods, but as a mopar MUST maintain no more stroke than 3.58. Our engine is going to be 3.31 stroke, 4.060 bore, W2 heads, and a question mark cam.

I dont know If I helped, but DIRT CARS ARE AWSOME!!!

...here's where you need to be.

member "340king" here posts quite a bit on that site. He has an older mod and has been involved with circle track racing mopars for longer than he probably cares to think about. Also if I'd known you had made the purchase earlier (before MaTS) you could have talked to "Cageman" as he was hanging out in the swap area with a friend of mine from SoDak. He would be another wealth of info on that subject too. Have fun and keep us updated!!

I have seen a legal 2bbl 360 with Engine Quest Magnums make 480hp with a hydraulic cam. I'd go that route myself.

Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

I'd go this route, too...hughes is selling EQ mag's (they call 'em iron rams) for $800/pr assembled, with either LA or mag intake BP...

hughes ad for heads:
