lifters rotate in the bore. so the circle is normal. actually desired

if the lobe looks good its perfectly normal.

?? so one is broke in and all the others are waiting to be broke in????

also whats better for coolant in gaskets
the small slits or the larger slits
has anyone had issues with over heating with the smaller slit gaskets?

The portion where that circle is isn't/shouldn't have any contact with the camshaft.

Go to www.moparchat.com then scroll down to and click on circle track chat then read Sanborns cooling mods that are in a sticky at the top of the page. It's a SB thread but enough similar & your Q will be answered.

This problem is something that happens more and more to flat tappet cams these days , it's due to the changes made in modern motor oils . they have removed most of the phousphorous and zinc in the oil which causes flat tappet cams to wipe out a lobe and lifter . go onto comp cams web site and they will give you more info on this . if your wondering why this dosen't happen to new car engines it's because they all run roller cams which see less friction due to the roller wheel.
you can buy oil that still have high levels of these elelments but they are label for off rode use only and can't be used in any car with a catalytic converter .The two brands I know of are pensoil racing oil and one of the Royal purple blends

i guess my cam is shot then. mine has those same marks on most all of the lifters.

and i used Valvoline Vr1 oil and ZDDP zinc additive.

but i admit, that chattering mark isnt what mine looked like exactly. mine had little circles on them though

Rotella isn't the oil it used to be.Zinc content has been significantly reduced over the last 1 1/2 yrs..

The circle is created by the rotating of the lifter frm the outer edge of the circle to the edge of the lifter if it's not a .904 speced lobe ramp .

I'd be rotating the engine over on this RACE MODER and what the rotation of the new lifter in that bore vs. the others .

As far as the size of those cooling slits , think about how thick the gasket is and the fact that the holes in the block vs. the head don't line up unless you have a late block with the figure 8 looking holes, there isn't a lot of water flowing thru it unless it's a figure 8 block with a big rectangle hole gasket.

My WAG is that the big slit is an early gasket design , the Mr. Gasket steel shims are still like that as was what I think were the original steel shims in my 69 383 , the small slit is probably the evolution of the gasket when the block holes got elongated to keep the water flow thru them somewhat the same ???

If the cam's lobe has teh same rough texture of the lifter bottom, dont waste more tiume sending more metal thru te engine. Just replace the cam. It could have been a bunch of things, but the fact that only one went south tells me its the lifter bore or preload. I would not use any cam taht ate a lifter. You caught it early and that's great. But trying to avoid the inevitable by trying a new lifter on the same worn lobe is just not good sense.

Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.
