Dave, just a question/suggestion, and if it's not doable or doesn't meet your preference for the car I'll understand, but do you think it's possible to LOWER the headlights on the grille shell as in my revised pic? To my eye the looks of the front end are improved/cleaned up with the headlights lower in relation to the fender...
Bruce, I went out and checked it. I could drop it maybe 2 inches, but nothing like it looks i the pic. The issue is that the trim on the side that contains the chrome is a raised beveled trim with that chrome insert and the end piece is the headlight mount, which is the end of that piece and also hold the headlight. I can get almost 2 inches without having to dent or modify the fender to allow it to inset. However, once I lower the headlight, then the trim piece looks out of place as its unfinished and left open at the end.
I will get a pic or two.
Dave

Drat, that's a shame... I don't suppose two inches would be enough anyway. In my PhotoShop I moved them down by half the diameter of the headlight. It's just that with the lights mounted so HIGH on the grille it looks "bug-eyed"... so maybe just slice that feature out of the hood sides and move THEM down too! Hey, it's easy to do in PhotoShop!
Ya, if thought it would be cool to section the whole trim piece and all and lower it, but then I would have totally chenge the fenders and counter sink them into them and then I am into a ton of work.
I could just use the trim pieces for end caps to the trim and place the headlights on the fenders themselves somehow

you get the idea, I like th enostalgia look, but some of these add a modern flare
Its a shame you dont want them in 17's, mustangs have been using 17X8 and now 17X9 versions of those wheels for some time and they are getting relatively cheap. Personally I think 17X8's in the rear of your 38 would look good and with those fenders you would still have plenty of room to put some real rubber on them and not the rubber bands some people are running on modern wheels. Just my

17's would look ok, the key is to get at least 5" of sidewall to avoid the "rubber band" look....something like a 235/55 or 215/60R17....

Dave,
I would think that 17's and 15's would look fine on that car. The key to me would be the ride height on the front end then you have to figure out how to get the rake or look you want the car to have. Some of this can be adjusted by how much sidewall you have on the tire (how much total height you have in the tire and wheel)
Its a real shame you dont have someone photoshopping this car build then you could get an idea what it would look like 15's front and back and 17's on the back.

If you want to keep the stock headlights and hood, it looks like the lights are going to stay where they are!

Is there any reason the trim has to stay where it is? Why not look at lowering the whole length of the trim down, then you can put the Firepower cutouts from the valve covers on top of the lowered trim pieces?
Again, get that photoshop guy doing something visualization for you!!!!
This "PhotoShop guy" suggested doing just that... I was being somewhat tongue in cheek though since I get the feeling that Dave likes the lines of the car pretty much as it is...
I do feel pretty strongly that lowering the lights on the grille shell improves the car's appearance, but it's HIS car, and only HE can decide how much cutting, choppin' and welding he wants to do.
FWIW, the conceptual rendering I'll do for him will involve lots of HAND drawing before it ever gets into PhotoShop for the color and finishing touches...

Yes, because the trim is actually not trim in the hood sides, its molded into the sides and formed into the metal and is not something that can be removed. It must be cut and sectioned down. The headlight end is just a cap that is set to match the molded hood sides.
I will look into it further but right now I am knee deep in tar.
oh and no need to be tongue in cheek, just tell it like it is, I want to know what every one thinks, I just dont want to have to spend a ton of $$$ and countless hours trying to change it up. I need to learn the ROD books as it seems I have seen headlight buckets and different items on there before. I may be able to change it up that way, use the headlight support, cut it flat and fill it and just use it to complete the trim and move the headlight down lower another way.
I will search for a 38 I have pics of that has something different on it. let me see, where is that pic-- never mind found it, its a 36 or so. a lot different.
here is a stock one
