Got a chance to get a small block 727 from a 74 Ram. I haven't seen it yet but will this fit in a 72' a-body? Any reason I shouldn't use a truck tranny?

Oh yeah, it's a hybrid.....it burns gas and tires!

If it's the long tail shaft then no problem.

I was told it's the long tail shaft, but I haven't seen it yet. I should get a look at it in the next couple days. Thanks

Just make sure it dont have the right side boss mount on the tail shaft housing. I did this 5 years ago with a 70 Swinger and a 727 from a 73 Adventurer and ran into that. Everytime you hit a good bump or banged the gears it would hit the side of the tunnel real hard. Luckily a local trans builder had a tailshaft lying around and cleaned it up for me with a new bushing and seal.Free at that! I changed it out in the car in about an hour.Very simple.

IF it is a short-shaft .. it is still OK. But you have to change that to be usable in a car.

I had the same thing in my 68 Barracuda when I got it. Took me a while (and lots of motor mounts) to figure it out.

yep,I ran a 727 short shaft in a 68 Dart

built a drive shaft with a slip yoke

people told me it would not fit,but it bolted right up and cleard the cross member with the bolt on yoke

I would do it again...

tranny shop looked at it once, then called all the guys out to look at it..they are the ones said it cant be done

left some in the parking lot for em

never say never with mopar, the A-body 8 3/4 is in my 85 truck now bolts right in

The truck has a long shaft? Like the B body trannies? 833OD's?

Like A body 4 speeds are short, so is the autos?

I have a 727 from a van-long.

Short 727 from a 3/4 ton BB club cab 2 piece driveshaft. No slip yoke

If the pickup is a 2 wheel drive standard cab small block unit it will have the standard long tail shaft. If it is from a 4X4 or truck with a split drive shaft with hanger bearing it will work but the transmission will have to vertually completely disassembled and the long tail shaft and housing installed or like in the above post with the short shaft truck reverse type drive shaft may be able to be used if the but you may also have to work around the park brake drum. Doing this you will have an excessively long drive shaft and it will be very prone to vibration.

The upper tailhousing in the pic below is the truck type with the side access plate, a tight fit in some passenger cars.

I ran one in a 72 Duster and nevr had a problem, they don't have a place to bolt floor shift linkage though.

Again, easily fixed by swapping the tail shaft.

I did swap the shaft to the trucktail since I had a B&M shifter and my friend needed a car tailshaft so his floor shift would work in his challenger.

Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.
