How were the springs finished when the cars left the assembly line?

How about the clamps that wrapped the springs?

i believe they are both natural. I use a reference guide from a very old Mopar Action, restorations tps by Roger Gibsone, and it says that they could either be natural or painted with black latex paint, similar to house paint. Paint inspection marks the end.

The latex paint referred to was the paint used for the markings. Paint used on the springs themselves was likely an Alkyd or Acrylic Enamel.
Most leaf springs were a dark natural spring color with natural steel clamps. Of the admittedly small percentage of cars built that I've had my hands on, I've only seen one verifiable example of black painted leaf springs; all the rest were natural.
