Here are test procedures from Direct Hit. You will need a computer to check CVI (clutch volume index)
1. Check the resistance of the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid. This is also called a Variable Force Solenoid. Unplug the Green connector at the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Check the resistance between pins 3 and 19 (or 28). The normal resistance is 5 ohms. The TCC solenoid is located above the solenoid pack. It is available separately.
2. Verify the correct fluid is in the transmission. It should have ATF +4. This is a special transmission fluid from Chrysler.
3. Check the Clutch Volume Index (CVI) on the scan tool. This will give a snapshot of information about the clutch packs. Normal ranges for CVI are as follows: Low-Reverse = 16-63, 2-4 = 16-54, OD = 42-143, UD = 26-74, LC = 16-25, and DC = 26-34.
4. If the value is higher or lower than the normal range, there is a mechanical fault with the transmission; rebuild or replace the transmission.
