Anyone with '71 v-code E-body 22" rad engine bay pictures from original configurations? Helping a friend with his resto. and want to know exactly what it's supposed to look like.. I'm sure the upper tank inlet was like the '70 version driver's side off center..

Thanks..

Does your friends fender tag call out for a 22" radiator?

Nope.. it doesn't. It's an original v-code 727 3:23 car and the core support has never been modified.

actually it would , if it doesn't have a 26 on it that would call out the 22" support .

cars with 22" radiators don't have a "22" stamped on their fender tags to the best of my recollection, only 26" cars.. So, by default, if there's no 26" call out, then it's a 22"..

does the tag have N51 on it - max cooling package giving it the 26" rad, standard would be the 22" I'm pretty sure - Joe

Joe, I can't remember and the tag's been lost. Even with the N51 code, wouldn't there be a "26" on the top row? Again, the core support opening is the original one and it's definitely a 22 incher..

Here's one on a 1970 GTX 440+6 car, pretty much the same deal for an E-body

Not a very good pic, but mine looks just like the one Scott posted; '70 V code with the 22" rad:

Once again, thanks ya'll.. Is there anything special about the fan clutch? Are the 22" shrouds available? All things being OEM, there's no reason my friend shouldn't be able to put things back. The only non-OEM factor is the radiator he has is a 22" with a 4-core. It may be just too thick, thus not enough clearance between the core and front face of the fan clutch....

I have no idea if they're the same but, my 6bbl, 22" rad RR doesn't have a clutch. It's a fixed fan and it has 7 blades, I believe. E bodies could certainly be different.

my 71 Challenger V-Code has a clutch fan and a 22 in rad. The 22in was standard in a 440/6 auto 3.23 rear.

Besides the B & E, don't forget the C body '70 440-6 SFGTs, they also had a 22" std. I had one years ago with a 22" and 3.23 gears.

My '70 V code Bee still has it's 22" in place and does OK in the FL heat.

Has anyone come across a 22"er with 3.54/3.55 gears or were they 727/3.23 only? In other words, could the 26" be deleted when ordering a car with a lower gear?

I haven't.. All big blocks that I know of that came with a auto/3.23/no a/c where standard 22"'s except for 426 Hemis, they all came with a 26"'er. Now, to get a 440 say, with 3.55's and a 22"? Wouldn't think so. I'm sure the engineers determined it was necessary. Probably void the warranty if it was done.......

Yep, all the axle packages came with the 26" rad upgrade:
