I am replacing an old timing chain and gear set, with a new Edelbrock doub;e roller set. the old gear(Cam gear) has a off centered hole in it, and then new one does not. The hole in the old one, is drilled at an "Angle" not straight through like a drill press would be able to do. My question is, Is the hole maybe for " Oiling" something, and if so, do I need to have a hole drilled in the new one to match ? thanx. scott

You have to have a hole in the cam gear for the locating dowel on a B/RB camshaft nose. Something doesn't sound right here.

Are you sure it's not an adjustable, offset, advance/retard sprocket? (They are NOT 'gears')

That hole is for lubrication to the back of the gear.

The thrust face on the gear is lubricated from the #1 cam journal. Why would you need another hole and how would it lubricate the back in any event? Just asking.

Certainly not for balance, not for (rear side of chain) oiling as the oil drips from the rear(oiling hole) and from the cam bearing as mentioned. I havent seen a pic but I dont know if it's to sling oil forward to the eccentric (which is sorely needed) but it's an extra machining step thats incorporated in there for a good reason(time is money) & money is #1. Wouldn't make sense that they are hung on pegs as they are on the assembly line.

there is a one bolt cam for B/RB engines

and a 3 bolt cam for B/RB engines

example would be you need a 3 bolt cam to run a gear drive on a B/RB engine

there is a dowl pin hole in the gear for alinement also

is this the hole you speak of?

pics?

I tried to send a picture to you guys to look at, but it said the file was to big? Anyway, the first hole is for indexing the gear to the cam, but the second hole is drilled at an angle, like to maybe sling oil or ?? It is straight across from the small indexing hole. scott

take a new pic & have the camera create a small pic file, get it on your computer then it will be small enough to go thru as an attachment. We need to see this

This it? If it came from the factory (edelbrock factory) I'm sure it's ok and it supposed to be there. Just put it on and go.

The hole is probably for additional cam chain lubrication. Is the hole drilled at an angle from the thrust area on the back of the sprocket outward to the front side? Centrifugal force would carry the oil from the center out to the chain.
They probably stopped spending the extra money when they figured the oil from the cam bearing supplied enough oil to get the job done.

Here's a pic of a single-bolt double row sprocket with an extra hole as described in the OP, it has the Mopar casting number but also has an etched part number "S-380".

Here's the sprocket with a 1/4" drill bit installed to show the angle of the hole.

yep, I would say for t-chain oiling

I got the pics th op sent me,and was thinking with snoopy

the drill bit gives a clear veiw of the angle, which I could not see in the op pics
