Hello
In my 6pack Chally engine is built on an 76 block, many specs on this engine is not known as the builder is not with us any more, engine in running car.
So its an external balanced build, runs fine pleenty of power no problem there.
Just wonder what you think if i one day want have around 500-550hp out of here. Am told 440 engines came out with an lighter version cast crank in 1974.
Is this bottom end crank & ext balance engine just crap or should i start with forged and go from there?
Have an spare 67 440Tnt 100% original, so could use bottom end from this?
Any idea, will my 76crank hold for around 500 just fine? /Michael

I've used a bunch of stock 440 forged steel cranks to make a 3.91 stroke motors in both RB and B blocks, they make really good power.
That involves having the crankshaft grinder offset grind the crank to BB Chevy 2.200 rod journal sizes and using a 7.100 long BB Chevy H beam or I beam forges steel rod with a custom or shelf piston with the .990 wrist pins to get the compression ratio you want scope
I shoot for 9.5 to 1 or less with my iron head builds no matter what C.I. and 10.5 to 1 or less on my aluminum head builds up
On your deal with a decent set of 906 type heads with the bigger 2.14 intake valves and the 1.81 exhaust valves with a little port cleaning up you make well north of 500 HP on pump gas, been there done that many times up
On your deal use the 1967 crankshaft and balancer and have the rotating assembly neutral balanced up twocents
good luck, let us know your results wrench grin

Just a question, in this day and age, does it even make sense to have a factory crank offset ground? What is the cost to do something like this? I would think that it would be more to buy a new crank but, it's a new crank and I would think the cost would not be too much more for what you gain; I could be wrong.

Thanks for your input, got your advice switch
to internal balance forged package. Can i use my
converter? want to as it was a set up from B&M for this build and works great. Take the balance weight off the converter and use it?
Hmmm wonder aprox how mutch power will the 76std bottom end handle in a street car?
Thanks Michael

I used a 78 block with a forged Crank in my drag car for 5 years with no problems best times are in my signature

71 demon stock stroke 440/indy ez-1 running 10.10 @ 132.14 mph in the 1/4 and 6.36 @ 107.46 mph in the 1/8 not in the same weekend but It did it then I sold it.
67 Belvedere that worked it's way in the 10's

I would just run it until it breaks, which it might never do.

I use to build a lot of 440 blocks as drag race motors (600+ HP) before I found my first stock stroke 440 block with a crack in the main webbing puke I've seen and heard of lot more since then, early 2000s whiney
I now use 400 blocks with after market caps for every build I can, street, street and strip or race only for motors not over 850 HP N/A up
I have and still do use stock RB 440 blocks for pump gas street and strip N/A motors under 650 HP with a good tune up with aluminum heads as long as the block sonic tests good to start with up
I would and do sho0t for under 1.40 HP per C.I. on those builds. twocents
IHTH.

I think a cast crank would handle 500hp. There's a member here running a turbo 360 with a cast crank with more power than that. You could just build your 67 440 with the extra hp, and then swap your engines...

Thanks Offroader, yes i have been thinking about doing it as you advice. In this case i only switch the 6pack's pluss have more time for the new build and still 2 running engines! One north of 550 and the other mild around 450hp!
Thanks for your input!
Michael
