What do they call the auto trans hanging on the back of this 97 5.9 (360) V8 out of a 97 Dodge Ram?
Once Mopar got past the 727/904 deal, I lost track. Gene

This 46RE is in a 39 Dodge pickup. I'm running a Hot Wire harness with the 97 computer, there is a pigtail from the harness that connects to everything on the trans. I need to do an aftermarket floor shifter, or I need to build something (there is no room for any kind of linkage at the bottom of the modified steering column), do I need a shifter for a 3 speed auto, or a 4 speed auto? If I use a 3 speed shifter, do I need to add a switch for the OD to work? Gene

I used an a/m shift cable (B&M i think). Any a/m shifter that works for a 727 will work. An a/m shifter with a line lock button could be used to turn on/off the OD if you want a manual control for it. Toggle switch would also work. Wire it as a ground interrupt in either case.

So, if I use a shifter for a 727, will the OD work if I don't add a switch? Do I only need to add the switch if I want to turn the OD off? Gene

Shifter still controlled PRND21, overdrive controlled by the computer. Switch was to lock out od.

Any 904 or 727 shifter will work. Only need a switch to turn off od when you want, can be on shifter or dash or...

...and if you don't use it to tow (often or long distances), I can't think of any reason you'd want to turn it off.

There will be a hitch on the back, but I doubt it will be doing much long distance towing, more like moving stuff around town.
Thanks Guys. Gene

Don’t forget the lockup in the converter

What do I need to do with the converter lockup? Shouldn't the factory computer take care of that?

This truck has a 91 Dakota chassis, a 360 Magnum, the 46re trans, a 9 1/4 (70s version) with 3:23 gears, a small 39-47 cab, hood, grill shell, and a 6'6" Dakota box floor with the 39-47 sides. Essentially its a Dakota RT with about a 1,000 less lbs. The little I've driven it leads one to believe its going to have plenty of power for the way this old man drives. Here are the most recent pictures I have of the truck, at the paint shop. Gene

Sounds like a fun build. But I think you may have caused a problem using the 70s rear axle.

I think the 97 ecm used the speed sensor on the rear axle to control overdrive which the 70s axle doesn't have.

A 91 Dakota ecm would have used a speed sensor on the tail shaft of the transmission. And the 91 Dakota axle would have a rear axle sensor for abs.

Where are you picking up the vehicle speed reading?

'98 was the year they moved the speedo input to the rear end.

The RE (Rear drive Electronic) designation started in '96, prior to that it was RH (Rear drive Hydraulic).

This motor/trans/computer and wiring harness were all used together in a different project that saw 2 years of road service before it came to me, and the od worked well. At this point, my concern is the shifter. I simply can't do anything with it while its sitting at the body shop, I'm really ready for it to come home. Gene

Yes, like the others have said, any shifter that would work for a 727/904 will work here. The 95 and earlier transmissions were hydraulic and you would have needed to setup an electronic circuit to turn the overdrive and lockup converter on/off. On a 96+ that's not necessary. You can wire in a switch to disable the OD should you ever want to, however this is not mandatory. The ECU will take care of the lockup converter and OD on it's own.
