Any tips on the install for a 440 rear main seal? I just put in a Fel-Pro and they have you use silicone for the sides and it leaks!! What do you guys think about Indy Cylinder Heads seal kit that they make it uses O ring materal on the sides? Any help would be great!!

The FP kit does not have the white side-seals ? ...I would use the side seals(properly preped) WITH the silicone. NEVER had a prob.

NO...it does not

I just went thru this with a Challenger 383 in my shop. The seal packages from a year or so ago included what appear to be orange"Noodles" in place of the traditional side seals they used for 40 years.
They were a SOB to install in the grooves in the retainer. They never wanted to go all the way down to the block surface...therefore not sealing completely.
I tried Victor, Felpro, Napa and another who I can't remember now and they all have gone to filling the retainer slots with RTV....MESSY!!! And hard to do from under the car. You can't queeze the silicone enough to get it to go all the way up the slots before it all comes gushing out the sides of the retainer...hence...glop the retainer from the outside so it's sealed.
We used to curse those old side seals when they'd swell up a little quicker than we wanted, but the new way sucks in my opinion.

Wow .. how times have changed.

The last time I did a real-main-seal was some time ago ...and I used the OLD side-seals with some silicone.

If you have a Carquest in your area, try them, they might have the old style fiber seals. I tried the orange ones and broke one trying to push it down, and I had to hunt around before I found they had them at Carquest (in a kit with the round seal).

I have to admit it's been years since I've been into a BB Mopar. What I'm wondering is if the Motorhome seals are the same, can you get them right from Chrysler?

Nope....the only seal package available for a BB Mopar is thru Mopar Performance...and that's the ones with the orange noodles.
Brandon at 440Source has the orange noodle ones listed on his website also.
One thing I never tried with those is to lather them up with diesel fuel or kerosene...that might make them easier to push all the way down in the retainer.
Otherwise...someone out there BRING BACK THE FIBRE STRIPS!!!!!!

At least with those I know when I've Effed up!!

Heres what has worked for me,i put anerobic sealer on the seal retainer where it meets the block.Silicone on the sides then after its bolted up to the block.I clean the backside real well then i place a bead of silicone across the back and smooth it out with my finger. Also i put studs with locknuts holding the pan on,this keeps the pan tight unlike the stock bolts.I race it all year and not even a drop leaks out. Good luck, and make sure not to get carried away with the anerobic sealer you don,t want it getting on the rubber seal ends.

Those are the ones with the orange "noodle" side seals......very hard to tell if the seals have bottomed out in the groove like they should.

Just my . I have used those orange silicone side seals with excellent results. There is a trick to installing them, follow the directions. Are they included with the seals that you are buying?

The most important part of the directions is the fact that the side seals are OIL FREE and the retainer is OIL FREE and CLEAN. Put some oil on the block side webbing so the seals will slide on the block and with the retainer and side seals clean and OIL FREE they will grip the retainer. If you place the side seals "slightly" below the base of the retainer this will compensate for any slippage on the side seal.

The side seals are installed with the retainer as a unit and not after it's installed like the old style so forget everything that you used to do with the old fiber seal.

I have attached instructions if you don't have any.
