b54406barrel master B Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 3,054 USA	I have, do & will continue to. I've never had an issue with them. I still have pop's very old Hastings, pistol grip compression tester from his old bike shop I use. Its got the little stripe-shirted Hastings 'guy' on the face of the dial.

BDS871Cuda top fuel B Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,949 land of 10,000______'s	We tore down an old 318 at a friends house and rebuilt it with parts from a blown up 318. the only thing new put in was a gasket set, and timing chain set. The Hastings rings from the blown up motor was used in the build, and it did just fine in the 84 Dodge farm truck. Oh, almost for got, we put in a new summit RV cam and lifter kit. Snap your neck, mega G-force launch, is all I want!

Anonymous Unregistered A	They are good stuff but just a note--Hastings tend to have more radial pressure than other brands--they were very popular back in the "Re ring" days--they seemed to out do others in worn out bores and thus gained a good rep. I have used tons of them and never ever had a problem seating or otherwise.

RapidRobert Circle Track R Joined: Nov 2003 Posts: 36,041 Lincoln Nebraska	they are a stock replacement type & especially their(3 piece) oil ring quality is really top notch compared to alot of the other non hi perf brands(which is not a deal breaker in itself) and you will have a larger gap on the compression rings as opposed to some file fit ones but with $$$ being tight & you having a good deal in front of you, nab em. live every 24 hour block of time like it's your last day on earth

The only real difference in ring life with chrome or other non--cast rings is wear resistance to DIRT and you shouldn't be getting dirt in there, anyhow. Most of us don't drive a rebuilt engine far enough to wear out cast rings, and they AVOID a multitude of seating problems with chrome/ moly rings

Still tests a ~140psi per clyinder. I cruise at about 3700-3800 rpm all day/night from L.A to Iowa in 50 or so hours. Is it true that cast ring form to worn cylinder walls better than moly rings. Like that can take the expansion and contraction better?? I reringed and repistoned my 360 in my van. #2 had munched the exhaust valve and left pitting in the cylinder wall. The valve was nowhere to be found! (JY motor) Did a light hone on all the cylinders and dropped in iron rings. (a little more on #2) That was Jan 2001. The engine has 150-175K on a .040 over block. The guy that helped me rebuild it told me NOT to buy iron rings as they would probably not seat in that hole. No problems and lots of hard use! The better ones are ductile cast iron. Then the rings can have a chrome or moly coating on the wear face. The better moly ones use a plasma application process that is less likely to chip. I agree though if you are just re-ringing an engine with maybe a bottle hone to break the glaze a plain iron ring is going to be less troublesome. But it you are having the block bored oversize at a machine shop you really should spend the extra $30 bucks for a set of moly faced rings. There is no break in the second the engine starts they are seated, thats one of the reasons its not unusual for a new car to go 300K+ miles without a rebuild. Maybe you don't drive a lot of miles but its nice to know that you won't wear out the bores in your life time if you don't or can expect a couple hundred thousand miles if you do drive a lot.
