put the new bullet in the car. cant get it to idle. i have tried 2 different carbs and checked valve lash.

440 solid flat cam source heads fresh valve job new rings bearings oil pump.

it revs high and cycles like a blower car once i get the idle near where it needs to be the car dies. also it is running very lean 15.7-16.0 the headers started to glow so i killed it and checked lash. all cylinders are good?????

my fuel pressure is low. but the carb is not emptying. fuel psi is 3-4 but flows 1 gal in 26 sec.

Vacuum leak....Might also check the ignition timing particularly initial.

I've heard them do that a few times. Absent any significant vacumn leak or fuel related problems, I always suspected the mechanical advance springs in the dizzy are see-sawing the timing and interacting with the engine vacumn it can pull at idle are the cause of the cycling, but I don't know for sure.

What strength advance springs are you running? What's the mechanical advance amount in the distributor in crankshaft degrees? You're not running vacumn advance are you? What's your initial timing set at?

Sure sounds like a vaccum leak especially cos you said it`s surging and being that lean at idle. Those intakes can be a bear to seal especially after milling heads and decking the block and I spend a lot of time fitting em w/out gaskets first and especially checking the angles bet. the head and intake w/feeler gauges to see if any milling is in order. I hope you find it so we can see your new and improved et`s. Good luck.

the distributor is locked @ 30deg the heads arent milled. im gonna go pick up new v/c gaskets and put it back togather i found a couple of loose valves. could that have been causing it? i will pick up another can of brake clean to check vacuum leaks as well. thanks for the replies so far.

What intake and carburator are you running?

Big lift cam with overlap...
ie..
Low vacuum puts a major burden on timing and carburator..

Just my $0.02..

I had an intake that one of the carter carb bolt pattern bolt holes were drilld through to plenum. Intake was used but when reassembled a new carb gasket was used. The new gasket half exposed the drilled through hole that the old gasket covered. motor ran like a pvc hose was not hooked up. Took off carb and loctited a set screw in through hole and problem was solved. GL

thats just where i had it yesterday normally i run it at 35. and i have a start and nitrous retard on my msd. oh and the intake is leaking pretty bad. im gonna let the motor cool then replace the gaskets. would the intake leak cause it to be lean under a load as well. it only ran like 14.0 afr with a load on it. carb is an 1150 95 square no pvs. (ya i know its too big i was just running it too se)

you need to sort out all the ignition/timing issues before you can tune the carb and ever expect it to idle and run right.

What do you mean by the intake was leaking? Do you mean vaccum leaking when you sprayed brake cleaner on it or oil leaking OUT of it like end rails? Those intakes can be a bear to seal and apparently mine might still be pulling a bit of oil which might explain all the needed jet. Call me if you want so we can chat......I`ll pm you my number.
