Anyone have any idea of an adapter plate to mount some kind of aftermarket speakers to the factory center dash location on a 1971 challenger. Preferably something to mount a pair of 3" or 4" dual cones as an example

Bill, I'm pretty sure a member made some, might have only been A-Bodies though.
An issue to watch out for on E-bodies is the close proximity of the dash frame below.

Anyway, you can buy the whole setup here (Custom Autosound) or use one of their dual voice speaker 4x10's - bass is apparently better than the 2x3.5".
But I believe in an E-Body the 4x10 needs a minor mod to the dash frame for the magnet to clear.

One other option is Retrosound They also do a DVC but with a flatter magnet. This is probably the route I will go if I could be sure the frame did not need any mods.

Anyway, that's my knowledge, hopefully of some use

Bill, when my dash speaker blew in my 71 Cuda, I used a piece of scrap metal I had laying around, traced the original speaker on it, cut two holes in it for 2 Kenwood 4" 40 watt dash speakers I bought, painted the metal flat black, mounted in the stock speaker location, sounds great too with the 6x9's in back, when I do listen to the radio, but usually listen to the radio - Joe

Bill, I had Jerry Landes make one for me for my B body, and hopefully get him to do one for my E body??? 74Sport on here, look him up. He made mine from aluminum, and I just sent him an old dash speaker to make a template.... Nice guy!

Just be sure if you are still running the factory radio, to always use 8-10 ohm speakers.
Modern 4 ohm speakers will damage your original radios.
Turnswitch.com offers some nice factory size speakers for the e-body .

I would think for best sounds you would forget the dash speakers and put a couple of 6 1/2" speaker in the kickpanels. The quality of the speakers that you can get into the dash w/o cutting are barely worth the trouble. I am going to buy a couple aftermarket kickpanel covers and install a pair of 6 1/2" Polks. Got 6x9's in the rear deck as well. Just a thought

Bad place to put a speaker. Cones will be toast in a year from all the water damage. If you put plastic behind them to protect from moisture, you lose the effect of having them in a baffled enclosure. Not to mention the damage to a door panel.
The rear where you put the 6x9s is the best. They will generate the most bass because of the large volume of the trunk cavity. Use the best speakers you can buy there. Cheap speakers will over excursion the voice coil when you slam the trunk shut.
The factory used crossovers so the dash stereo speakers only put out mid and highs and used the middle speaker for the lows. Since there is little directivity in low frequencies, they got away with it. It doesn't take a huge speaker to be adequate. Altec Lansing Voice of the Theater speakers used only 3 inch drivers to make the high frequencies go. They did have a heck of a radiator in front of it though.
