Maybe this is elementary, but never worked on a 8-3/4 yet (7-1/4 and 9-1/4 yes). This is out of a '68 a-body. 741 case.

If I take the 5 flange nuts off, the axle should slide out, right? Mine is not. I can feel it slide a little(backed off on the adjuster). Service manual shows some sort of press or something that you mount on the axle flange.

Is a slide hammer needed? Never needed one for this job before. Dont want to mess anything up.

I've had the flange hang up on the studs before. I used a screw driver and gently pried on one side and then the other until the flange was clear of the studs.

If the outer race was spinning in the housing, you could have develpoed a groove. That's also a possibility.

I usually just put the brake drum on backward with a couple of the lug nuts and use the drum as a slide hammer. It shouldn't take much to pop them out.

Good advise. I've done that too and it works.

Ah, good idea. I'll give it a try.

I bite the bullet & take off one shoe & take out the horizontle e brake strut as it always is in the way & pry(carefully) on the flange so it doesn't get cocked on the studs as I use the reversed brake drum(as mentioned) as a slide hammer.
