Hello guys, can you tell me what determines the blackout behind the Air grabber hood? My hood and bubble are at the body shop and I don't know if I should leave it the color of the hood like some RR or black it out. My car is a 1972 RR , the color is red. Thanks

Here's a good discussion on the subject from a few years ago.

what plant is your car from?
what is its "Scheduled Production Date"?
what does the fender tag/broadcast sheet show for stripe codes?

here is a December built RR/GTX (RM23U2G14xxxx) from St. Louis with N96/V21/V25 on the fender tag

no behind "bubble" hood paint & no cowl blackout

I have owned 6 1972 RR and 4 were air grabber cars and none had the blackout behind the bubble. All the experts that i have talked to about this subject told me that every year the striping was different if you had V21. The 1971 RR with an air grabber was blackened out behind the bubble that was V21. 1972 RR with air grabber and V21 was like the above picture. Who is to say that some 71's might have slipped thru. Here is my 72 with V21 stripes.

72 rr dude, I have your old 72 #'s matching red with white interior, I built a AG for this car and it in the body shop now having work done to it. Next week there painting the hood and the concenses is 72 should not have the black out behind the AG.

Hope your enjoying the car it was rebuilt front to back. If I would have kept it I was going to put an air grabber on it also. The concenses is right from my understanding the black behind the bubble was 1971 and was the V21 code with what I believe were a few left over hoods making on a few early 72's.

RR dude, As u you know this is a very early 72 car 8/19/71 so it's very possible it could have had the black out. Could you tell me what you did to the engine, cam , crank etc.

Is that the bench seat 4-spd car that I owned?
I too thought the blacked out cowl was a 71 only thing.

it wouldn't be an issue of left over '71 hoods

it would be an issue of an employee knowing how the hoods were painted for last year's model & not having or reading the procedures for the new '72 model year

The car now has chin spoiler, no wing, rear wheel opening moulding , 15" rallye wheels
with acorn centers. Putting a air grabber on it as we speak. Thinking about putting it back to original and remove the canopy top but I'm nervous of what I might find under there.

The car looks great. Sure miss the ol' girl. I never cared for the 70 Go Wing but was on there when I bought it.
The car was originally from NM and had a tow hitch on it. The guy used to tow his camp trailer with it. The roof should be in good condition unless being back there in the humidity for the last 15 years has taken it toll on it.

Maybe this helps, but I think I'm going with no black out my car is not a n96 car so from all this reading I think it should be no black out.
