The shop that has my car is getting ready to restore the grill and tail panel. Can anyone help me identify what color and paint types is correct for each area. Any other pictures may be helpful too. As always, thanks! Scott

I'm told that top peice on your tail panel should be black not silver.
I painted mine silver.

I used the same interior paint that I used on my dash frame and other stuff inside. DIA 9388.
Then I used DIA 3960 silver poly for the silver part.

I painted a argent tail panel black because I wanted to save my oem RT tail panel, this one was practice. I used it on my clone car, it's not perfect or correct. I still have my oem tail panel with original paint on it.

The bezals on top are correct, one's NOS and the other I painted, you can't tell them apart.

Then this is my first attempt at the front grill.

Then I realized I was missing some argent silver.
So I painted it on there. I did not paint the snorkels, they are original plastic gray.
This is wrong, the grill.

This is right, I believe.

Here's car from Ken Moser and the finer details, It must be wrong too?

I have no idea on the paint.

R/T's and rubber bumper cars are painted with a black out type scheme. While all other cars have an argent grit type paint scheme.

Looks like the mounting 'tabs' on the far ends of your grille are missing????

OK, I'll put something out and others can correct as necessary. I'm in the process of doing this myself.

I think there are three colours used:
1) non-textured Argent silver (a bright silver).
2) textured Argent med/dark silver
3) Black (semi-gloss?)

The first has been likened to the Mopar Argent silver wheel paint - that's what I'm using. The second you have a number of options depending on your budget and desire for dead-nuts accuracy. Most correct and expensive would be sources like All-trim
Cheaper and close would be Totally Auto (what I'm using) and I recall there is an off the shelf Krylon paint that is very close too.
Black - no idea.
All the open spaces are the textured silver. The front scoops including fins and the rear light surrounds are the bright silver, as is the rear surround. Black is used on the headlamp surrounds between the lights themselves, and on the floor of the scoops.

That's off the top of my head without the parts in front of me, hope that helps, corrections welcomed.

I am restoring a 71 Challenger Deputy and I too am attempting to replicate the OEM style paints for the tail panel, grill and headlight bezels to the best of my ability.

Argent style or textured paint is extremely difficult to replicate as exact as the manufacturer did it, but it's easy to get so close as to make it nearly impossible to tell.

I've been at it two weeks straight for this particular car. Oem paint code F7. Trim codes do not tell the styling or base for the argent grill, nor the color name for the grey/silver of the inner grill snorkels (no other word comes to mind) with the stainless rings.

After much cleaning and inspecting in different lights, the outsides of the snorkels are a silvery plastic color, while the rear portions non exposed to any sun are a medium grey. I will post photos, of all my thoughts and my processes for this restoration.

The aregent style grainy silver effect are the results of a black basecoat, with silver metalflake infused into a subdued, or flat clear coat, which is thinned enough to allow the metal flake edges to stand up and be felt. This is the only way I have been able to replicate the texture.
Using a black basecoat the results are as night and day, and do not represent the cover of silver properly, so a few test panels later I mixed and found a meduim dark gray basecoat with the metalflake and clear coverage that exactly replicates the surrent grill color and texture scheme as if it were represented from the factory (Without the fade and weathering as it is seen currently to the naked eye) I hope.....


Bear with me as my nerves and camera take us through what I hope will be a Victory for all 70-74 E body enthusiasts whom wish to make their car look as perfectly original as possible.

Any and ALL advice and thoughts on tones or shades are welcome, and ALL NOS clear photos of these items in this post are welcomed with open eyes and willingness to learn.
