On my 72 challenger 340/727,i noticed today previous owner ran trans cooler line into radiator than out to external trans cooler then back to trans. Is that needed or could you just run lines to external cooler bypassing the radiator completely???

I would bypass the radiator.

EDIT
As long as the cooler is large enough

I have heard using the radiator also is a good idea since it helps keep the fluid cooler when the car isnt in motion like stop and go traffic. without airflow the trans cooler doesnt work as well as the radiator cooler. Makes sense but could be a bunch of BS.

I always use both, a cool transmission is a happy transmission.
