Anyone see the new Car Craft mag yet ? I was in the Giant grocery store and looked at it. There is a real nice 67 GTX in it with a Ray Barton Hemi. But it says it dyno'd at 610 hp and 750 ft lbs of torque. Then it says the car runs 9.30's at 147. I did not see the car weight but it don't look to be real lightened up so I am guessing its between 3400 and 3800 lbs. But 9.30's with 610 flywheel hp ?? It just don't add up right to me. Car is real sweet and I was wondering if anyone knows anymore about the car ? Ron

Could be wheel horsepower, those numbers are always wacky with a loose converter.

Yep, saw it, and the numbers don't make any sense at all. I don't doubt the car may run that fast, but the numbers in the article can't be right if it does.
Does look like a VERY nice ride!

Magazines are sometimes negligent of fact checking and or typos. I've seen it way too many times with articles on some stories having to do with the arts.

The writers are frequently people born since 1990, and have no comprehension of these petty details.
Check HRM's rod side clearance in their Gen-3 1,000 HP hemi article.

work
I've seen numbers, ET and MPH, quoted by the writers that where no where near the cars real results on articles written on cars I raced against in SO CA years ago shock whistling
AKA aside, the writers have no morals and use numbers that they think is best to help sell the magazine runaway down

If that car is complete and has stock iron parts on it then 3800 lbs is dreaming. If headers and alum heads, etc, etc then maybe.

It would take about 900 hp in a car that heavy to run 145 mph and the engine doesn't sound like a 900 hp engine. It is a factory '68 block with factory heads and a factory crossram. The 610 hp sounds roughly correct for the engine but the track times don't seem to match unless the car is super light. But the car doesn't appear in the pictures to be super light so beats the heck out of me.

But on the flip side, I've watched Mazzolini run 10's in his Sebring with a little 318, cast iron heads and a Q Jet carb. Most people would say a 318 with factory heads and a Q Jet carb is a 14 second combo.

Magazine writers provide a form for the owner to fill out. Whatever the owner writes in the form, is the "fact" that the writer quotes, plus all the writers embelishments, mistakes, and misunderstandings. We know that the world is full of "9 second cars" that have never been on a track. " I beat that red camaro, who beat that guys mustang, and that thing runs 10's, so my car runs low nines. I'm sure..."

It looks like a race car to me but it could pass as a street/strip car. I thought the 610 hp had to be at the wheels but it even says flywheel hp. I bet it was maybe an 8 or 9 as 810 or 910 hp and they mistook it for a 6 and put 610 hp. I know in my article in Mopar Muscle on my car somehow they listed my rear wheels as 17 x 7 when I wrote 15" by 7". It is a very nice car as there is no question in that. Thanks for the replies. Ron

Years ago there was a guy here with a 454 Chevelle, tunnel ram, two fours, big cam, big tires and supposed low gears. He told everyone that it ran 9.50 @ 145. I beat him bad with a 71 RR, 67 440 with a small General Kinetics cam, headers and 3.91 gears. I figure my car would run 9.0s at close to 160. biggrin

On the other hand, maybe it does run 9.30's and he's bs'ing about the engine specs.

After actually seeing the article, I believe the 9.30 ET, and I believe the 610 horsepower. How could that be? confused
He says he has 33" tires, 5.13 gears, 8 inch converter, only burns 110 race gas that he buys by the drum, and ran a best of 9.30's at 143. At 143 mph, the hemi is turning 7900 - 8000 rpm. he claims it makes 610 hp @ 5400 rpm. He never says thats the peak horsepower. It has race seats, glass hood and deck lid, aluminum radiator and hood hinges, a 4 link/coil over rear, and who knows what other light weight parts. So lets guess 3450 race weight. That would take 760 wheel horsepower to accomplish the claimed mph. So if his 610 horse @ 5400 rpm Hemi puts out 850 at the crank at 7500 rpm, that would put him in the 9.30's. With a well built Barton 500 inch hemi in a well sorted car, I could see that happening.
