Remember that 68s are unique The Body numbers are the SO number and will match the fender tag and broadcast sheet and window sticker. The VIN number will match the broadcast sheet and window sticker. Good luck

4-speed will be marked on the passenger side of the case. So same as 69 and later. But is it the vin like later, or is it the so number

I went to check the car out and it turns out it's a console automatic. Didn't check the numbers on the trans as it was in an enclosed trailer but the numbers I checked on engine, tag, VIN plate matched and he had the build sheet as well. Unfortunately there was a lot rust on the car, the floor pan, trunk, rear frame rails all in bad shape. The pass side torsion bar crossmember had a hole big enough to fit my hand through and someone replaced the rear quarter panels at some point but not a very good job. If you saw the VIN stamped on the engine then you would have seen it on the trans too ... if it were the original trans ... it's stamped on the bellhousing flange right above the engine number at the same time after the 2 assemblies are bolted together.
running up my post count some more .
