Working on a steering column for a 1970 b body.
I'm afraid to try and remove the circular bushing in the lower lockout lever on the shift tube in fear its just going to crumble

Anyone know of a source for a new one ?
I'm tempted to just have the tube/lever plated and leave it in there

Are you talking about the one that is on the lever arm that the column shift linkage runs off of? Those are a dealership replacement part, but they are baby blue instead of white.

I just restored my column for my 70 Duster and it is 4 speed with the reverse lock out system. I have never seen an unrestored or restored version of an A body column . Do you believe that the lever on the lock out tube is plated and that the tube is left natural?

I cant speak for A body columns. But on an E or B body column the lockout lever is yellow zinc dichromate spot welded to a bare steel tube

The bushing I need is rubber and about the size of a nickel

The hard plastic ones mentioned go in the transmission and / or the frame mounted brackets

I was lucky enough that my 70 rubber grommet was pliable enough to get out and reuse. Try Brewers he has the whole lockout setup and may have that grommet separately.

I took a razor blade and sliced it off. JUST IN CASE I cant find a replacement. I can put this one back in and the bronze center bushing will hold it in place


I had some NOS ones a few years back and am out of them now.
Ive looked around Brewers site and found nuttin.

I will send him an email to ck just in case

Instead of plating the tang, I painted it gold. It came out good I think.

Here are the complete kits. Not too sure if the bushing is in with it.

Part number for the rubber grommet is 1553304, the bronze bushing is 1553305.

John I came up with 2781444 for the grommet
and 2781445 for the bronze bushing ( I dont need the bushing )

I found them and have 3 of them enroute . Should be here by the end of the week

Where did you find them?

I found the # I came up with on ebay.
Once they're here I will verify if they are correct or not

Those numbers are for the manual trans column shift.

Is there a bronze bushing that goes in there? If so I don't have that part. Maybe one on a column shift manual trans, but for the key lock out tube tang?

The one I need is for the key lockout lever. ( or in this case the shifter lever as its a column shift )

Ive ordered the 1st number I came up with , 2781444 . so its a only a matter of time before I find out if they'll work or not.
